Sign i see frequently

So, there is this sign that I keep seeing, but I don't know what it is. People seem to use it for their logos, or for avatars on other things, but I don't know what the sign actually means. It looks like two Fs one pointing up and one pointing down.

What does this mean? Why are people using it as logos and avatars?
