Hi, I am wondering if I should get a Blackberry or Cellphone with PocketComm. I still want to be able to text message my mom or e-mail her to her cell phone or home/work. Is is possible to e-mail via cell phone text messaging? Can you still do this with a Blackberry too? I think it would be a great idea for me to have communication via relay service when I am not home with my TTY or computer, but I do not want to relay my mom or other family members. Just text message them. I saw that my mom's cell phone has a TTY set up to activate, but I think that that texting via cell phone using relay would take too long.

What seems to be the best choice for me? What store has all these things to see and test?

A word of caution:

Your mom's cell phone doesn't have a TTY built in. She would need to have a Krown Pocketcomm TTY as well. Texting or Emailing back and forth would be much faster.

I just got the latest Sprint Blackberry, the 7130e, which is slim like a cell phone but has email, web access, SprintIP Relay, calendar, news, etc. like a full size Blackberry. It doesn't have a full keyboard -- I actually like the predictive typing, and got used to it in 5 minutes easily. Great, clear screen too.

Here's a link to what I have.Sprint PCS Blackberry 7130e

You can go into any full size brick 'n mortar cell phone store to check out what they have. There's a lot of different companies out there and each one has their exclusive cell phones and unique brands, but I'm happy with what I got.

You should get a pile of wood and a big wet blanket to send out smoke signals. They're easier to use and understand than these new complicated cell phones.

not all mobile phone can be translator from e-mail to SMS to e-mail.

It's safe to use cell phone, if you don't use e-mail as personal often.

Sprint offer $15 for unlimited SMS, it's charm service. Of course, voice minutes is required. ugh. Only if Ogo still in stock, you would want it. It's frickin cheap monthly serivce.

here in Alaska GCI offers TREO650 data plan/package unlimited txt messaging for 40 monthly Data Products compares to other in lower 48 states 49.99 plus 15(sprint)/20(verizon, singular) :) only tmobile offers 30 monthly SK and BB

coming soon BB with camera if same 30 monthly I would probably buy Tmobile BB 8100 then :D (cuz GCI doesnt have relay updated in any smartphone :/ I just commented to FCC)

I think a Blackberry, such as what Dennis posted, or an 8700 c or g would work great for the OP. If the Op is deaf, that is. If hearing, either method would work. I use a BB 8700g, with full QWERTY keyboard to do all that the OP is asking about, and it does the job well. Wtih a BB you would need to download IP Relay or an IM program and use relay through that. You can get them free or for a small cost. Text6 messenging also can be done on it as well. Check out the BB.

$15 per month? Is that all on your monthly bill? I did look for that price online in Sprint's website - there is nothing. How much does it cost for unlimited data (like Sidekick - $29.99/mo)?

Okay, some of you use letters and numbers that I don't even know what they are. I have known about some technologies, but I never got into it to know the details. I am not planning to sign a contract with a company if I use a cell phone. I'll probably surf the web and look into a store.

Yeah, if you're having a really hard time understanding what we're saying or discussing here, it would be an incredible benefit to just visit a store and actually handle a phone and try it out there. Nothing beats the experience of holding it in your hands and getting a sense of how it fits you. You would also be able to ask the sales people questions, and if you think they're BSing you, you can hold off on buying and come back here with the models you like for us to answer questions about.

Yeah, I am not looking forward to any BSing as you said if that happens. I went to blackberry website, but it doesn't help much. Thanks I will visit one.

BB=Blackberry
8700g=model number
QWERTY= full keyboard (named after first 6 letters on your keyboard)
IM= Instant Messenger

Did I miss any?

Go to Blackberry forums for best info about them.

I am trying to reach FreeWoman about info for the deaf in Alaska.
I was searching the internet about sk and bb and found this thread. My wife is deaf and I am heareing, it's hard on my wife coming to a place with so few deaf people. I just joined alldeaf.com because of how much information for deaf things. I see you live in Alaska we just moved from Arizona to Kenai Alaska in April 1999. Which do you think is better ACS or GCI for wireless communication for the deaf? You can email her at moultonfamily@acsalaska.net
Thank you, Doug
