Our veterans are getting a raw deal in this situation.

Nearly three years after the Fort Hood shooting, a group of soldiers and their families is pressing the Department of Defense to make victims of the rampage eligible for the Purple Heart and other benefits.

About 160 people affected by the Nov. 5, 2009, shooting released a video this week describing the attack on the sprawling Texas Army post.

"The victims are being forgotten and it's frustrating," Kimberly Munley, one of the first two officers who arrived at the shooting scene, told The Associated Press.

Maj. Nidal Hasan, an American-born Muslim who officials believe was inspired by a radical Islamic cleric, faces the death penalty if convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in the attack.

While several government reports have described the rampage as an act of terrorism, soldiers and their relatives say the only way Fort Hood victims and their families will get the same benefits as troops killed or injured in combat is if the defense secretary specifically designates the shooting a "terrorist attack."

Pentagon press secretary George Little said Friday that the Department of Defense "will not, at this time, further characterize" the shooting because it is committed to the integrity of the ongoing court-martial proceedings against Hasan. There are concerns that formally changing the designation could affect the legal proceedings.

Little said survivors of the shooting are "eligible for the same medical benefits as any service member."

Staff Sgt. Shawn Manning, who was shot six times that day, said his injuries prevented him from continuing to serve. But he won't receive the same benefits as those severely wounded on the battlefield because an Army medical evaluation board didn't deem his injuries to be combat-related, he said.

An October 2011 letter on behalf of Defense Secretary Leon Panetta was sent to U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, saying "the department is dealing with the threat of violent Islamist extremism in the context of a broader threat of workplace violence."

But the National Counterterrorism Center's 2009 Report on Terrorism called the Fort Hood shooting a "high fatality terrorist attack." The shooting also was mentioned in the State Department's "Country Reports on Terrorism 2009."

Witnesses have said that after lunch on Nov. 5, 2009, a gunman wearing an Army combat uniform opened fire after shouting "Allahu Akbar!" — or "God is great!" in Arabic — inside a crowded Fort Hood medical building where deploying and returning soldiers received vaccines and other tests.

A Senate report released last year said the FBI missed warning signs about Hasan, an Army psychiatrist who was to deploy to Afghanistan the following month. The report said he had become an Islamic extremist and a "ticking time bomb" before the rampage at Fort Hood, about 125 miles southwest of Fort Worth. Officials also say Hasan exchanged emails with Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical U.S.-born Islamic cleric killed in Yemen last year by a drone strike.

This is a horrible and embarrassing situation. Our Veterans and the families of the fallen deserve much better.

Sad, that is how society is lately.

Here is another example which makes me realize how society choose which to remember and which is not that important to remember.

Very sad!

I'm sorry for going off point but still reflects what I'm seeing now.

Oh, I remember about a lot of debate about classify Fort Hood shooting as terrorist attack, so now, if it is classified as terrorist attack so victims can access to more and better benefits, so that what I didn't know.

forgotten? in what manner?
The bigwigs forget about the consequences for the victims. All they care about are the political images that result from the trial.

Yep, they had to have their way and try this as a crime. Now the families suffer. Especially the families of those who died. Sad and wrong.

oh I see..... :(

A couple of examples: A purple Heart Medal for injuries received during a hostile conflict is points toward advancement exams and reviews.

The soldier who was shot 6 times and can no longer serve is legally disabled. Probably medically retired. His change in classification could allow him to receive a _____ percent tax exempt lifetime monthly stipend to live on.

Instead they have to suffer due to this political correctness crud.

Give rights to Maj. Nidal Hasan. Take away rights for his victims. Meanwhile, the below article continues to show who is supporting who in Washington:

From Breitbart

In the Spring of this year, US Army Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Dooley was condemned by the Joints Chiefs of Staff (JCS) and relieved of teaching duties at Joint Forces Staff College for teaching a course judged to be offensive to Islam.

The course he taught, Perspectives on Islam and Islamic Radicalism, was an elective course that Lt. Col. Dooley's superiors judged as presenting Islam in a negative way. His superiors were persuaded to come to this conclusion after receiving an October 2011 letter in which 57 Muslim organizations claimed to be offended by the course.

The fact that Lt. Col. Dooley is a highly decorated combat veteran with nearly 20 years of service under his belt apparently held little or no sway with the JCS. As a matter of fact, JCS Chairman General Martin Dempsey "personally attacked" Lt. Col. Dooley on C-Span on May 10, 2012, during a Pentagon News Conference.

Yet the craziest part of all this is that "the course content, the guest speakers, and the method of instruction" for the course was all approved by the the Joint Forces Staff College "years ago."

Former CIA agent Claire M. Lopez commented on the state of things: "All US military Combatant Commands, Services, the National Guard Bureau, and Joint Chiefs are under Dempsey's Muslim Brotherhood-dictated order to ensure that henceforth, no US military course will ever again teach truth about Islam that the jihadist enemy finds offensive (or just too informative)."

God bless Lt. Col. Dooley for possessing the courage of his convictions.

They're getting Purple Heart awards today but they still aren't getting the financial compensation that usually goes with Purple Heart injuries. :(

over here it only classed as frontline killing if died on front line if get men back to hospital and die later it not classed as war injury disgusting...so many people coming back deaf getting little to no help compensation it appauling situation

How come, this sound not sound right to me , they were wounded on the job no matter where it happen .

"How come?" is the same question the wounded veterans and survivors are also asking.

I would like to know if Obama plans on doing anything about this he is
commander-in-chief after all .
He already has done something. Obama ordered the Secretary of Defense to cut back on the wounded veterans' Purple Heart benefits.

He's also the person that wanted the Ft. Hood massacre referred to as work place violence instead of Islamist terror attack.

He's done plenty enough.
