TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Julie Costas is a Tallahassee lawyer, but went before state lawmakers Tuesday with a personal story. She regretted getting an abortion earlier in her life and supports a bill requiring a 24-hour waiting period before a woman can have one.
"It was a big deal to talk about it before the committee today," she said.
The bill requires a physician, in person, to inform the woman of the procedural risks of an abortion, probable gestational age of the fetus and the medical risks. Then the patient can undergo the abortion only 24 hours later.
MORE: Read HB 633 and SB 724
Bill sponsor Sen. Anitere Flores, R-Miami, believes the law is needed.
"It's something that 26 other states do. The Supreme Court has said that a 24-hour reflection period is something that isn't an undue burden," Flores said.
Many people also attended the meeting to oppose the bill, like some with Planned Parenthood, which delivered more than 7,000 petitions to the speaker of the House and the Senate president asking them not to support this legislation.
They delivered those petitions asking for the bills to go unheard. And, voices inside Tuesday's meeting felt unheard as the chairman whisked through the emotional debate in an attempt to end the meeting on time.
"This legislation to infringe upon a woman's conscious threatens to criminalize women again," said Terry Wonder with the Democratic Women's Club of Manatee County.
The Senate bill passed with yes votes from Republicans only. The House version goes up in its last committee on Wednesday.
