Hip hop artist Sean Forbes must really like San Antonio – he will be making his third trip to San Antonio College on Feb. 18 to perform at the McAllister Auditorium.
The native of Detroit, Mich., must like the weather we have in S.A. in February. Then again, it might also be that war, welcome he gets from the American Sign Language (ASL)/ Interpreter Training program at SAC and the deaf community when he he appears on the campus.
Forbes, 30, is the co-founder D-PAN (the Deaf Professional Arts Network) a non-profit organization whose aim is to make music and music culture accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing community.
A trio of his fans – all students in the Interpreter Training program at SAC – explained why they like Forbes’ shows and what the audience can expect.
“He doesn’t just appeal to deaf culture – he has a foot in both doors and he appeals to kids and adults,” said Frank Perales.
“I was expecting everything (to be) in sign language,” said Tabitha Teeples. She found that this is not the case. “For students not in ASL, it is still an entertaining show. He raps using his voice and his hands at the same time.” The lyrics of the songs are projected on screens on stage.
Forbes’ music videos can be found on YouTube and at This Is D-PAN. A new video, “Let’s Mambo” features actress Marlee Matlin, who recently performed on “Dancing with the Stars.” One of Teeples’ favorite D-Pan videos is a White Stripes song, “We’re Going to be Friends,” that is performed by deaf children.
Beth Renfro has seen Forbes perform two times at SAC. The second time she came with her children, who thought the videos were “cool.” “Music brings everyone together – you can all enjoy it at the same time,” Renfro said.
“One of things so great about Sean Forbes, is he likes to get to know his fans. He likes to stay late to sign autographs, he sells T-shirts that he signs you can take pictures with him for free,” Perales said.
The trio all agreed that the artist is a popular draw – come early to grab a parking spot and a seat and plan to socialize before the show.
