I dont understand how getting a fm system could be so difficult! I was told at the beginning of the year that i would be getting my fm in a few days, my audiologist also said hed call my school and talk to my deaf/hoh counselor and tell her wat kind the recommended but until then id get a loner one...well ive yet to see my fm or one that i can lone and im so frusterated! Ive been sitting in the front of classes and such which helps but my main problem is one of my teachers who has a bit of a lisp and he talks really fast...so i dont know what to do..i dont want to keep bothering my counselor at school and being a nuisance but at the same time i do...what should i do!?

I see you live in Canada so I don't know what the laws
are but here in the U.S. you could force then to pay for
a oral interpreter.

I am sure the school would rather pay for a F.M system
than pay for an interpreter

Don't think of yourself as being a nuisance!! This is your education and the school has to provide you with the accomidations you need. Unfortunately, sometimes you just have to keep ragging on them but hey it's not your fault they are taking their time.

Doesn't an FM system require the room(s) to be wired? Or is that an old style, or am I just confusing it with another accomodation?

question: what is an fm?

How it Works
The Personal FM Education Systems broadcast the speaker's voice directy to the ears of the individual listeners. While the speaker wears a compact transmitter and microphone, listeners use portable receivers and earphones or a device hooked to the hearing aid, to hear the teacher clearly and easily, even from the back of the room.

PS. Im getting my FM 2morrow and i get to pick from 2 and see which one i like better! Thanks for the advice guys..i got my mom to call and see wat was going on and my counselor just "didnt get around to it" but hopefully she still comes 2morrow!ill keep u posted to say how i like it!

Glad to see you got FM

I wrote to you earlier about getting the FM. How is the FM working I see your mentioned you would comment later. How did it go for you - are the battries lasting for you all day. My FM batteries were great until they got older then I would tell the school and they would arrange for a replacement. The unit I had was the Phonic Ear Personal FM, the blue ones used in the schools. It worked well for me so when I finished schol, I purchased one for my own use. When you are done school check with your audiologist and Ontario Assistive Devices Program.

I can understand the comment about hearing even when not in the classroom. I was part of the group that encouraged one of the local churches to get an FM system for the church. One of the older ladies (70+) who was really having trouble hearing tried the demonstation unit and she had to take a trip to the bathroom and her reation was the same as yours - WOW I did not miss a thing.

With my hearing loss I depend a lot on lip reading so I can tell that someone is speaking but not what is being said (speech discrimination).

Glad everything finally worked out. And in the furture, anytime the school is slow about providing the services you need, you just bug the hell out of them!
