It looked like pencil writing until it got wet. It was a novelty in my grade school years.I failed to find pictures of the pen we had to use for third grade cursive. It was ballpoint, but not retractable type. It had large area for the grip. I remember Dad moaning about having to buy it. I saw some fountain style pens that had that kind of grip on them. I never used fountain pens except for those with an ink cartridge.
