School Shelves Harry Potter After Parent Complaint

A school in the eastern German city of Chemnitz has taken the Harry Potter books off its syllabus, after Christian parents objected on religious grounds.

Parents of two fifth-graders at a school in Chemnitz complained that the depiction of religion in the Harry Potter books offended their Christianity and asked to have them removed from the curriculum, school principal Stephan Lamm told ddp news agency.

The junior-high class at the Johannes Kepler high school agreed. It replaced the book with Rennschwein Rudi Rüssell (Rudi Ruessell the Racing Pig,) a well-known children's novel by German author Uwe Timm that has not been published in English.

The Harry Potter series is about an apprentice magician who fights an increasingly dark and evil world. It has emerged as singularly popular in the world of children's literature, and made the author, Joanne K. Rowling, a billionaire.

Classroom compromise

The decision was made after open discussion of the problem with the parents and in the classroom, Lamm told ddp. What most disturbed the parents about the Harry Potter books was the depiction of magic and mysticism, which play a major role in the story.

A compromised was reached to allow children whose parents don't object will to work with the Potter books in small groups, he added.

But the education-policy spokeswoman in the legislature's Left party parliamentary group criticized the school's action as "an act of self-censure."

'Inviting interference'

"(By acquiescing to the request,) the school director is essentially inviting religious fundamentalists to interfere with the educational and academic goals of state-funded schools, according to their discretion," Julia Bonk said.

"The lesson plans of state-funded schools should not be subject to approval by people who hold all possible religious convictions," she said.

The deputy chairwoman of the teachers' union for the state of Saxony, Ursula Kruse, refused to take an official stance, telling ddp it was hard to do so at a distance. But in general, she said, children should learn to deal with diverse points of view -- something that can be done using the Harry Potter series.

Potter: not obligatory

The state's education ministry also refused to take a stance. But ministry spokeswoman Manja Israel noted that, while fables and fairy tales should be taught in school classrooms, no one is obligated to put Harry Potter on the curriculum.

A representative of the Lutheran Church of Saxony, Harald Lamprecht, told dpa news agency that in his opinion, the Potter series were "magnificent books" and "highly respectable" stories that depict the fight of good versus evil.

Hmm interesting. Seems that a lot of church groups are against the Harry Potter series due to it's focus on magic and myths.

Makes me wonder Just what is wrong with the book.. because I have read the books and I don't see a problem with any of the books.

Yes I second that.

Oh, that odd...

I'm surprised that AFA haven't got any complain about Harry Potter and doesn't got one biggest in USA but guess that other countries can be different. To be understand, Christians are not number one to listen or respect since people have rights to against on them, except for attack or make violence.

I love Harry Potter, it's good movie but never to check out on books.

Harry Potter is made from fiction then does nothing with religion related, just like story on book and movie.

[Sarcasm] Because it's WITCHCRAFT!!! Anything that's not specificly of Jesus Christ is WITCHCRAFT, and therefore evil! [/Sarcasm]

 religious gotta go.. it all old news.. nothing but cause trouble for us..

just let religious go.. it old news..

Oh man!!! Some people are so anal! The fact is that these stories inspire children to read in today's video/computer/media culture is just awesome and for those people to ruin that? These people need to get a life and focus on their own business.

i m a chrisitan myself so i can tell u our point of view i m not smacking anyone or making any crititzing comments i m merely trying to answer the "why"
anyway the reason why harry potter is evil to us is because of its black magic and we re practically treating black magic like cancer bascially since harry potter promotes black magic (or so some of us think)
thats why those parent didnt want childrent to read those or even be near those books or movies cuz some of us beleive that the demons ll possess the childrens and honeslty personally i wouldnt allow my kids to read harry potter cuz i actually hate black magic i ve seen what it have done to ppl so bascially only reason the chrisitan ppl didnt like harry potter or anytihng related is mainly witchcraft or wizardry involved thats all
to be honest i dont know ifs harry potter is evil or not i cant judge sinc eits not my place i m merely pointing out the reason of their belif thats all

regards

but im baptist i know about god vs evil

mostly people who know about movie is good or not but im sure Harry Potter is good movie but its alright for me to watch this movie.

if kids wanted going watch that movie they ask parents for going see that movie if says yes or no they wait!

Oh boy! Another fun book banned...Ive read the book and it does have magic and spells, etc but it is more focused on Harry Potter and his friends than on magic alone. But people with certain religious beliefs will ban anything that is against their beliefs.

yep yep i m just saying why chrisitan for some part hates harry potter is all if u wanna watch fine i wont judge its not my place so no bigge
XD

it is make believe..not real. Why are they taking this book so literally? Maybe if those Christians educate their chidlren about it not being real and still stand by to their Christain beliefs, then things should be fine. Why take everything so literally? I mean..I have read stories about aliens taking over Earth but I know it is sci-fi make-believe. Important that the kids can distinguish between fantansy and reality?

-faceplant keyboard- Methinks shelfing this violates a right of freedom of choice. Next thing you know they're going to want to ban keebler elf cookies because cookies are made by evil elves with 'black magic'. Silly christians.

Nobody's making them read the books nor making their kids read the books. They can avoid it for all i care but removing it from school. Oh, perfect logic make other people suffer cause of the christian beilef. Nobody else has the right to choose whether something is evil. I guess fundmental Christians should run the world WHEE! How would you fucking like it if someone started bashing and burning bibles trying to get them OUTLAWED. HUH? Step off. Yes I am angry because this is completely ridiculous.

YOU WANT TO KEEP CHURCH AND STATE SEPEREATE? KEEP YER NOSE OUTTA IT THEN! -vexes- I need to find my zippo -cackles menacingly.-
