Foundation Academy's Principal Tells Parents Of Students Who Smoke
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The principal of Foundation Academy said parents have a right to know if their students smell like cigarettes, so she's sending home a smoking acknowledgment form.
Principal Nadia Hionides said she's taking a stand against tobacco on her San Pablo Road campus.
"There are 18-year-olds that are here and they smoke, and their parents need know that they smoke," Hionides said.
Hionides calls the form a permission slip of sorts for legal-aged smokers to puff off campus. The form reads:
"I recognize that smoking is illegal before the age of 18 and an unhealthy habit.
I recognize the unhealthiness of the habit, and I will work to stop smoking.
I will not encourage anyone to smoke with me.
And if I must smoke at lunchtime, my parent or guardian, gives me permission."
Hionides said it's her way of getting parents involved.
"Parents need to be OK to tell their children no, and if the students disobey them, they need to have the conscience to know that they are doing this against their parents' wishes," Hionides said.

If a parent does sign off on the smoking acknowledgment form and the student wants to smoke a cigarette at lunch, the principal said the student has to leave campus or face expulsion.
Some parents said the form opens the door to trouble.
"They forge their parents' names and they don't get called to verify it," parent Lisa Brady said.
Other parents said they understand the concept at the prekindergarten through 12th grade school.
"So these kids, not only are their parents or the teachers smelling it, our younger kids smell it, so they have to learn that their behavior affects the younger children, and the younger kids look up to them," parent Robin Paris said.
