Native Americans did wear headdress but I wonder if the some parents knew some of men the Village People band are gay if that would had been more of an issues to them.
When I first heard that the performance was cancelled, that's what I thought.Native Americans did wear headdress but I wonder if the some parents knew some of men the Village People band are gay if that would had been more of an issues to them.
North Dakota has many Native Americans.
I know that.
It's misappropriation...From my experiences talking with Native people and reading about their experiences, the Dakotas states have a very shameful/sad history of racism particularly toward American Indian people.
While I'm not sure I agree with totally cancelling the show, the "Native headdress" thing is a stereotype. Not all all American Indian people/tribes have worn or -still do- wear the Plains Nations regalia, but that is what whites end up thinking when the headdress is always used as representation of "Indian".
among other things....But Why Can’t I Wear a Hipster Headdress? | Native Appropriations
In the context of stage performances by the Village People, they were using all their outfits as costumes to represent characters. For example, the singer dressed as a cop wasn't really a cop, and the the singer dressed as a soldier wasn't really a soldier.WDYS! and Reba!
....but headdresses are not "costumes" but religious and culturally significant items.
and that Native image is a stereotype.
