A California Highway Patrol officer in Santa Rosa saved a small bird from becoming roadkill and then snapped a selfie with the feathered creature, officials posted on Facebook.
It all started around noon Saturday, when Officer Richard Adams finished pulling over a driver on River Road, he noticed the small bird standing in Olivet Road.
The bird was not moving, so Adams snatched it up, posed for a picture with it, and dropped the animal off at a bird rescue center on Chanate Road.
The CHP’s Santa Rosa office then posted the selfie on Facebook and fans seem to be enjoying it. Thousands of people have liked the picture with hundred more sharing and commenting on the amusing image.
“As is the case with children and the intoxicated, Officer Adams now felt it his duty to ensure the bird's safety,” the post reads in part.
In the post, though, the CHP identified the bird as a blue jay, but it is more likely a western scrub jay or Stellar’s jay. Blue jays do not live west of the Rocky Mountains in the United States.

On Saturday at about noon, CHP Officer Richard Adams had just cleared a stop on River Rd. when he noticed there was a blue jay in the turn lane at Olivet Rd. The bird was standing there and not moving, almost getting hit. As is the case with children and the intoxicated, Officer Adams now felt it his duty to ensure the bird's safety. So the officer stopped traffic, grabbed him up and held him the whole way to the bird rescue center on Chanate Rd. Some will say this was just a common jay, but his blueness indicated a general support of law enforcement.
