Teen Arrested In Buckman Road Rage - Jacksonville News Story - WJXT Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a road rage shooting on the Buckman Bridge on Thursday afternoon.
Derick Jackson is charged with aggravated assault and throwing deadly missiles into a vehicle.
Police said Jackson was driving a Toyota Yaris south on Interstate 95 and was merging onto Interstate 295 to go to Orange Park via the Buckman Bridge about 4:30 p.m.
Police said traffic was heavy, and Jackson was trying to merge and cut off the driver of an Acura MDX. Jackson told police the other driver became angry, Carl Kroppman, drove up next to him and yelled at him.
Jackson told police he threw a can of air freshener at the Acura, striking it on the side.
"I was just trying to scare him," Jackson said, according to a police report.
Police said that Kroppman, the driver of the Acura, told them he thought he had been shot at, and he then displayed a firearm and showed it to Jackson in a non-threatening way in fear for his safety to try to scare Jackson, according to police.

As the drivers continued to travel at highway speeds, darting in and out of traffic, Jackson said he was chasing the Acura, according to police.
Police said that Kroppman told them that as he was showing Jackson the gun to scare Jackson, it accidentally fired out the passenger side of the vehicle, and the bullet struck the rear passenger in Jackson's car. The passenger was shot in the left leg and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Jackson told police he became angry and pursued the Acura while his passenger was telling him to take him to the hospital.
Jackson told police he rammed his Toyota into the rear of the Acura at least once, if not twice, while they were both traveling at about 70-80 mph.
According to police, Jackson was able to get in front of the Acura and slammed on his brakes to get the driver of the Acura to stop.

Both vehicles stopped in the roadway while still on the west side of the Buckman Bridge in the far left lane, police said.
Jackson told police he got out of his car and confronted Kroppman, even though he had just been shot at. Kroppman was on the phone with 911 dispatch when Jackson approached him, police said.
Police said Jackson told them that at no time did Kroppman pursue him and that at no time was Jackson in fear of his own safety.
Police said that 911 calls revealed that Jackson had been driving erratically prior to and throughout the road rage incident. Police said Jackson was the aggressor.
The front-seat passenger in Jackson's car told police that Jackson had been driving extremely fast and erratically and had ignored pleas from the other passenger to stop.
Kroppman was not arrested in the shooting, and police said no other charges are pending.
The road rage incident caused major traffic delays on the bridge, blocking lanes for hours.

We were caught in this mess yesterday. It took us over an hour to get over the Buckman Bridge. This bridge is almost Three Miles long crossing over the St. Johns River.

People are idiots. We see this way too often. Road rage is getting out of hand and people are to quick to get violent.

Yes, I read about it...(& saw it on the news)....Along with the road rages, several people have been murdered in the past 2 days also....

I avoid rush hour, and inasmuch as I love the Buckman Bridge and the beautiful view, I seldom drive over it, and I also avoid the expressway as much as I can....Sure would not want to be you caught up in all that traffic!

Wirelessly posted (sent from a smartphone. )

Wow that does suck!

Wow. Makes me so glad I work a 9-to-3 workday. I get to miss the bulk of morning and afternoon rush hours where all the road ragies are out. Anything different than those hours I would not be so lucky.

I am glad you are ok and werent caught in the middle of it.

yup even in NZ, where its plenty of room and yet people still get shitty. I think i should say cars gotten too good that people now overestimate their driving skills...and times are bad too with job losses and rising costs of living...i think that's a potent recipe for road rage in itself..

I deal with them daily and wonder why I came home so stress out from crazy drivers who does not like to obey the traffic law. I drive number 3 highway killer in the world daily to deliver the mails and the drivers does not realize and does not care. Oh well, I am gambling my life, my work and my health to deal with those people. I hope they see this when they drive on this number 3 highway killer and know how many people have died on that road.

eh I deal with at least 5 road rages a day everyday when commuting to work and that's everything in just 12 miles. I also deal with road stupidity. I just bought a helmet cam at a huge discounted price.

I will start filming my own rides. ya'all will shit in your pants and I guarantee it. I'd probably shit in my own pants too after watching my own ride.

Road rage is serious business and no laughing matter. I've seen my share of it, though I am patient on the roads. The last couple times I went with my own brother on errands, I was shocked to see that he had road rage, and the final straw happened when he drove my car with me in the passenger seat: he tailgated cars, yelled and screamed at other drivers and flipped the bird a few times. I told him he can no longer drive my car until get gets help for his anger issues. He was very hurt and angry by my words, but I was adamant. I hope he gets help, it was ridiculous the way he was acting behind the wheel.

...at ur brother...hope he takes heed at ur words to him...driving like that would get him killed where I live...I admit that I've flipped some drivers the bird too...even honked my horn at them....staying cool in traffic jams or dealing with bad and unruly drivers isn't a piece of cake, tho.'

The worst I've done is honking the horn a few times in my lifetime.

same for my friend. I tell him that all the time. one day - he will eventually get either hurt or even killed by some driver with even worse road rage than his.

I can never understand such hostility. Why do such stupid thing especially with passengers in the car? Their well-being is much more important than telling other driver to "go learn how to drive".

I cannot understand it either. I know that it is not worth weaving in traffic and passing so many cars. In the end you save just two minutes, and really, what difference does that make?
