Teen Arrested In Buckman Road Rage - Jacksonville News Story - WJXT Jacksonville
We were caught in this mess yesterday. It took us over an hour to get over the Buckman Bridge. This bridge is almost Three Miles long crossing over the St. Johns River.
People are idiots. We see this way too often. Road rage is getting out of hand and people are to quick to get violent.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --
A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a road rage shooting on the Buckman Bridge on Thursday afternoon.
Derick Jackson is charged with aggravated assault and throwing deadly missiles into a vehicle.
Police said Jackson was driving a Toyota Yaris south on Interstate 95 and was merging onto Interstate 295 to go to Orange Park via the Buckman Bridge about 4:30 p.m.
Police said traffic was heavy, and Jackson was trying to merge and cut off the driver of an Acura MDX. Jackson told police the other driver became angry, Carl Kroppman, drove up next to him and yelled at him.
Jackson told police he threw a can of air freshener at the Acura, striking it on the side.
"I was just trying to scare him," Jackson said, according to a police report.
Police said that Kroppman, the driver of the Acura, told them he thought he had been shot at, and he then displayed a firearm and showed it to Jackson in a non-threatening way in fear for his safety to try to scare Jackson, according to police.
As the drivers continued to travel at highway speeds, darting in and out of traffic, Jackson said he was chasing the Acura, according to police.
Police said that Kroppman told them that as he was showing Jackson the gun to scare Jackson, it accidentally fired out the passenger side of the vehicle, and the bullet struck the rear passenger in Jackson's car. The passenger was shot in the left leg and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Jackson told police he became angry and pursued the Acura while his passenger was telling him to take him to the hospital.
Jackson told police he rammed his Toyota into the rear of the Acura at least once, if not twice, while they were both traveling at about 70-80 mph.
According to police, Jackson was able to get in front of the Acura and slammed on his brakes to get the driver of the Acura to stop.
Both vehicles stopped in the roadway while still on the west side of the Buckman Bridge in the far left lane, police said.
Jackson told police he got out of his car and confronted Kroppman, even though he had just been shot at. Kroppman was on the phone with 911 dispatch when Jackson approached him, police said.
Police said Jackson told them that at no time did Kroppman pursue him and that at no time was Jackson in fear of his own safety.
Police said that 911 calls revealed that Jackson had been driving erratically prior to and throughout the road rage incident. Police said Jackson was the aggressor.
The front-seat passenger in Jackson's car told police that Jackson had been driving extremely fast and erratically and had ignored pleas from the other passenger to stop.
Kroppman was not arrested in the shooting, and police said no other charges are pending.
The road rage incident caused major traffic delays on the bridge, blocking lanes for hours.
