(RNN) - Wearing a Revolutionary soldier uniform, a retired Marine and former history teacher from Missouri died while laying wreaths on the graves of veterans at the Leavenworth National Cemetery in Kansas.
Fred Kaffenberger, 80, had lain wreaths on a number of graves Saturday while participating in the national Wreaths Across America program when he approached the tombstone of his son-in-law, a Korean War vet.
"He just collapsed and was gone," his wife, Wanda Kaffenberger, 79, told the Daily News.
Kaffenberger often wore a Revolutionary soldier uniform as a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, an organization open to male descendants of people who either served in that war or who contributed to establishing the independence of the United States.
He had taught history and civics at Kansas City public schools for 30 years.
