**Attention...wasn't sure where was the appropriate section to post this, so MODS, if it's in the wrong place...move it to the right one for me. Ta! :D

Restaurants which use mobile phone numbers taken to confirm bookings could be fined more than $1 million if they use them to send promotional text messages.

The same applied to nightclubs which ask for a number when a jacket is checked in, then spam the owner with invitations to come at half price, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The fines were part of anti-spam laws which went into effect this weekend, and would be policed by the Australian Communications Authority.

More than 60 per cent of internet email was now junk, the paper said.

Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Kellogg's, all the commercial television stations and many radio stations were all heavy SMS promoters, the paper said.

Individuals could face daily fines of $220,000.

However, 98 per cent of email spam still came from overseas and would be unaffected by the Australian legislation.
