Do anyone here know about scientific research about effects of AVT?

I am curious because AVT is on offer here, and I am not sure if exposure can be unlimited, should be kept at a level, or if it is justifiable at all? Are there any downsides emotionally? Research about other kind of speech therapy can also help. No links to advertisements, either it is pro-ASL or pro-oral, thank you!

AVT = Auditory Verbal Therapy. The idea here is to understand speech without lipreading.

I don't think it's appropriate for all deafies. It woudn't have been appropriate for me before my operation because the sound that I heard was too distorted for me to make sense of speech without lipreading.

Oh thanks...I am brain dead today but not tired enough to go to bed. My hubby is watching the Food Network and it is boring to me. Ha!

Are u already understanding speech now?

Not yet but I'm making progress.

So, if you are making progress then getting implanted later still works? I am trying to understand the fuss about implanting babies if there are deaf adults who can benefit from them as adults? Maybe that's just me and having a hard time thinking outside of the box on that one. Anyways, that's good that u are getting the progress u want from your CI.

The reason for that is they're more likely to benefit from the implants.

I know that I may never be able to speak on the phone because I was implanted so late and I'm told I'm doing better than many prelinguals even though I've had only two AVT sessions. Just because I'm doing well so far doesn't mean other adults will do well. It also doesn't mean that I'll ever be able to understand speech without lipreading.

I do not know if I'll ever learn to understand speech but so far it's been easier even though I still can't hear the v, b, p and other sounds but now I can hear the s, sh/ch and t sounds. My hearing will never be normal even with the CI. I could only hear vowels and the occasional sh/ch sounds before the implanation. In six months, I may be able to hear at 20 db but right now I can hear at 30 dbs.

Just like it's harder to learn ASL once that window of opportunity passes, it's harder to learn spoken English (and how to interpret sound in general) after a certain age. The brain simply loses a lot of its plasticity as we age.

I agree. It would have been a waste of time with my nephew as his hearing loss was so profound that hearing aids were useless.
