Would you pay more money as event comes closer?

An example would be one event that takes place on February 15. Ticket price will be $15 per person up to January 15. After January 15, it'll be $20. At door, it'll be $25.

It is usually a dancing event or a event that takes place at bar.

Other example would be an interpreter retreat. It would be $90, but goes up to $105 as event approaches.

Sometimes, I wonder why they don't just keep the price stable. It is interesting that they would raise price as event approaches.

In a way, it's a smart business plan. Get people to sign up fast. If for some personal or professional reason, the person is not able to go to the event, the event will pocket the money. Person would always sell or donate their ticket(s) if they cannot make the event. One issue that may arise is that some places would not allow transfer of ticket(s) if you cannot make it. It would be nice if more places allowed people to transfer ticket.

I think the only way to do that is to run a discount. You would have to show a set price then, for an amount of time, give a discounted price. I do not believe you can adjust the price leading up to the event just to capture more profit, unless you can show you incur more cost. I'm sure major sporting events would be doing it. Airlines do this, but I think that is because the prices are tied to fuel cost.

Pricing laws vary from state to state..

EDIT: To more clearly state it: I don't believe the face value of the ticket changes over time for events. Subject to laws, of course.
