I got this from my daughter's school teacher and I thought I'd share it with other parents of young children in here.
Raising a Reader
Reading is a critical key to success in school and life. Below are some ways to help make reading fun for your children.
Storybooks
Read together. Choose books that you will both find interesting and share the journey through these stories together. Ask your child questions as you read.
Storytelling
Create a new story around the dinner table. Family members take turns adding a new detail, a new character, or a plot twist. Or have your child create visual stories by cutting pictures out of old magazines. The child then tells a story that connects the images. Rearranging the pictures can lead to dozens of stories.
Words and Letters Everywhere
Become a letter detective with your child, searching for words in your daily world. Try some of these simple ways.
1. Cover the refrigerator with magnetic letters.
2. Tape name lablels on objects around the house. Play memory and regcogntion games with these words.
3. When you go for a walk or a drive together, be on the lookout for letters and words on billboards and signs.
4. Challenge your child to find letters and words on boxes and labels at the grocery store.
Use the Library
Make regular trips to the library. Be sure your child have a library card and take advantage of story hours and special events.
