i am getting an fm system for school.....but i dont know how this all works......do i have to buy it....or does the school cover the costs....also i dont have a HA at the moment...but i am going to get one soon(hopefully) ....will the fm work somehow before i have my ha..???? thanks i advance......

Who did you originally talk to about an FM system? (audiologist, vocational rehabilitation, deaf/hard of hearing program) I would ask that person whether or not your school is allowing you to borrow an FM system (some school systems/dhh programs require you to return an FM system at the end of the semester) or whether they will be purchasing an FM system for you to keep.

When I received my FM system from vocational rehabilitation, I had to provide VR with an audiogram and a written recommendation from an audiologist. Once that information was received, VR ordered the FM system.

Until you receive your hearing aid, you can use headphones with your FM system.

thank you.......i talked to my schools dhh office...they said that i was going to get a trial fm system so i wasnt sure if that implied that it was a trial until i bought it or......idk...

You might want to talk to them again to find out, but it sounds like they are allowing you to borrow an FM system to see how it works out before purchasing it. Do you know what kind of FM system (brand name) you will be receiving?

The issue of who is going to pay for it will depend on what state you live in. I live in Missouri. Mo First steps program paid for one for my daughter. We were told thjat this FM system is for family use only. When she starts school, we are not to use it for school. The school district thAt we live in is required to pay for its own fm system. So in teh state of MO, the school dist covers it.

Hope this helps.

I am employed in the Institutional Equity office at a college, and believe I can help you with that one. The school (elementary, secondary, and post secondary) are required to provide an FM system for school and extra curricular activities. Not all FM systems work the same for all people, so they have probably ordered a model that they have used prior to see if it will be beneficial for you. You may require a different model depending upon the wiring in the building and your specific needs and level of hearing loss.

Yes, you can use the FM system without a HA, provided that you have earmolds. Or you can use headphones without earmolds. No, you are not responsible for paying for an FM system that is used educationally, but you will not be permitted to use it for anything other than activities related to school.

Hope this helps.

Usually, the school can pay for the FM system. I suggest you talk with a VR counselor or the school.
