Are there major differences between ASL and SSL? Is SSL used in Spanish speaking countries in South American, or do each of such countries use their exclusive system of sign language? Also, where can I find some good instructive resources in SSL? I want to learn SSL.

Thanks!

Each country has its own sign language.

Some may have similarities or cognates but they are still separate.

I need to learn sign language from Costa Rica. Where can I learn it? What do I do?

According to the website links, Costa Rica uses LESCO (Lengua de señas constarricense), Costa Rican sign language.

Deaf cultures: Costa Rica

"There are 3.4 million people living in Costa Rica and I was amazed to learn that there are only 8 Lengua de Señas Costarricense (LESCO) interpreters in a country that includes 44,000 Deaf people. LESCO is the sign language of Costa Rica. It was amazing to discover which signs in LESCO and ASL have similar hand movements. I’ll never forget when a group of delegates, ASL interpreters and I went to McDonald’s in San Jose for a ritual Friday night gathering of the Deaf community. I was surprised to see more than 100 people signing in the warm night air. LESCO is different than ASL but I understood most of the people I signed with by watching their signs, body language and gestures. That night I learned that all it takes is patience and openness to develop lasting friendships with Costa Ricans."

Spain uses Spanish sign language.

I read on different site that they use SSL as well. So, she could probably learn either one.

"Who Uses Spanish Sign Language?

Andorra, Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Gibraltar, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, and Venezuela are the Spanish-speaking countries of the world. In most of these countries, national associations of the deaf have published sign language dictionaries. Many of the dictionaries listed below were found on the Gallaudet Library page "Sign Languages of the World, by Name," and others were from the International Bibliography of Sign Language. Population data came from Ethnologue. Some countries are too small to have their own native sign language and are instead utilizing American Sign Language (ASL) or something close to ASL."
