Hello All,
My name is Nikki and I am an interpreting student. I'm in the process of writing a research paper about technology and the Deaf community. Part of my paper will discuss the use of pagers. I've found quite a bit of information already. However, I am curious to know if the the Deaf community started using pagers when they were first available and only capable of sending numeric messages, or if they weren't really useful until text messages were able to be sent. I'd really appreciate anyone sharing their experience with early pagers.
Thanks allot!

For me, I wouldn't buy a cell phone if text messages weren't available. It would've been a terrible waste of time to get a cell phone if I wouldn't text.

no question or person is ignorent when question asked guinenly..i use mob phone have limitless tx and husband use calls on it get full advantage...i do alot train travel so like phone for fb and games...

I think pagers were available through HearMore and other companies who sold HoH equipment and other companies from the beginning. However, my guess is most people were introduced to them through work. That was my first exposure to pagers at that time.

what do you mean for your research? Pager started like late 1990s Text pager. what is the benefit for your research about this?

I think she is wondering about when the d/Deaf jumped on the cell phone bandwagon. Whether it was very early on when only basic messages could be sent or when phones became like they are today. I will say that I had the early Motorola T900; this would have been about 1999-2000-2001, give or take. It was right after that that the Sidekicks came out and they were all the rage for us. I don't know how many of us had the very early texting (via Motorola or similar) because the only person I ever texted then was my husband. I didn't have anyone else to text because nobody else I knew was using them yet. (He and I had such different work schedules then that we almost never saw each other, so this early form of texting was handy for keeping us connected.)

i used a pager it was something i got from rspd...i know it uk site but they had some info about it...i had one of the early motorola and same reason at the time only had my son and friend i think mine was about 1997 it feels longer but you maybe right 99

Before there are were another pages that motorola T900. I had motorola T900 while I believe that they first had wyndell something like that.

Never had a pager. Went right to a cell with text after prices came down.

I can remember sending thousands of messages BEFORE T9 (predictive text) came out. Boy... I sure am glad we have keyboards now.
