Brӓga the wolf licking Ellie’s face. (Photo: Ellie Ross)

He’s looking into my eyes, searching my soul. Inches apart, I’m sure he can sense my heart pounding and my trembling legs. We’ve only known each other seconds, but the connection is instant. It’s the most terrifying first kiss of my life.

But that’s the thing about an Arctic encounter with a wolf — it’s just as thrilling as it is unnerving. Brӓga, the alpha male, sniffed me warily before licking my face with his warm, soft tongue. It was his way of saying hello to anyone who dared enter the vast enclosure where he lives with his brothers and sisters.

This remarkable rendezvous took place at Polar Park, the world’s most northerly wildlife park, in Norwegian Lapland. Winter is the best time to visit, when the wolves are most active. Time it right, and you could also be rewarded with a swirling Northern Lights display overhead. As well as wolves, Polar Park is also home to lynx, brown bears, arctic foxes, moose and reindeer.

Ill bet you whatdidyousay would like this story

Wrong ! I do not like this story ! I this it's a sad day when the only way wolves can is live is behind a chain link fence and not be live out in the wild and live free like the wild animals they're.

wdys you right plus the wild ones norwegions and Sweds will kill without hestation

I got an email saying 500 wolves were killed b/c they're not under protection anymore . :( I was out with my daughter and granddaughter
yesterday and I saw an animal on farm land that for sale . I was not able to made out what kind of animal it was at first , it was a very skinny deer eating grass . :( The poor animal had to run through the traffic and everything to get to the farm . This land will be gone in a few years , and the deer will have go into to people yards like they're doing here in my yard looking for food .If we still had wolves around it would had killed the deer for food and the deer would no longer be going hungry . The deer had no meat on it so it would had no use is hunting it for food. I find it very sad that we're losing all of your wild animals , and the only way they live is to be treated a pet . I hear a wolf howl in the deep forest than in a cage .

Then go in live a cage and let the wolves run free.

You don't understand. You might love wolves but try walking up to one without your gun and you'll understand what I'm talking about. Wolves don't care about you. All they do is kill for survival.

No you don't understand , wolves in North America do not eat people ! They will if they have rabies or feel threaten . There is no needs to wipe wolves off the earth out of fear of being attacked by one . How often are walking the deep woods anyway?? I lived in the woods and walks home at night and was not bothered by a 'big' bad wolf. I camped out in the forest too and a mountain lion did not attack me or my dog when it was only a few feet away from us at night . I was face to face with 2 foxes in my back yard and the male fox was close enough to me he could had jumped on me. He gave me plenty of warning and time to walk away unharmed . And a coyote came right up my dog and me and it ran pass me a few times in my yard. The coyotes in my states breed with wolves so the one that came up me was part wolf.

That they do, unlike humans that kill for the sheer joy of it; animals kill only to feed and to protect themselves or their own. A cage is no place for any animal. It's disgraceful that this country feels entitled to hunt to the point of extinction out of fear and ignorance. All animals, sharks included, deserve protection...and all have a right to their life - their natural life in the wild - safe from the two legged predators which have done more damage than any single species.

There's a long history of non-rabid wolves attacking people. If you discount the wolf-dog hybrids and escaped captive wolves that number drops slightly. They normally would go after children (it's been found 90% of attacks are on kids under 18), and second to that women which falls into eating the weak first. There's reasons that the number has dropped in modern times. You have far fewer young kids going off into the woods on their own to pick berries and mushrooms, so the opportunity simply isn't there. In india where kids still go off to forage by themselves or with small numbers of others, wolves attack and eat them in high amounts. In the mid 90s I think it was, something like 75 kids were attacked by wolves in one area in India and only 20 survived.

If you just don't let your kids wander off into the edges of the forest, you're pretty much safe from them. Children don't even have to get into deep forest to be at risk from wolves, it's easier to pick them off closer to home.

You don't understand that people can love/like/appreciate/respect things in Nature at arm's length?

I went to a wolf sanctuary in my state and the man that started the sanctuary
told the visitors that the wolf-dog wolf-dog hybrids is a horrible idea b/c you have a
wolf who has a natural fear of man bred with a dog who does NOT have a fear of man and if the animal attack a person people automatically blame
the 'wolf' for the attack . And this made people become more fearful of wolves. Any time you breed a wild animal with a domestic animal you're doing more harm than good for the 'wild' animal.

Then we should gather up the wolf pups and raise them to respect man. Just like we do our pups to be friendly with us.
