No PSP in 2004
Sony delays its next big thing until next year.

February 25, 2004 - In a bombshell announcement made by Sony Computer Entertainment today, it was revealed that Sony Computer Entertainment had decided to delay the release of its PlayStation Portable device in North America beyond 2004 and into 2005. The details first broke on mainstream news site CNN Money.

"The reason we pushed it out here is we wanted to be sure there's a reasonable amount of software titles to launch with hardware," said Teresa Weaver, a spokesperson for Sony Computer Entertainment. While Sony representative Ryan Bowling later told IGN by phone and email "The PSP launch in Japan will come around the close of calendar year 2004 as previously announced. The North American release will follow within our company's fiscal year (2005), which ends March 31, 2005. We have received an overwhelming amount of support from the software development community with regard to PSP. In order to ensure that the launch timeframe is well supported, we want to allow developers and publishers sufficient time to optimize content for our new portable entertainment platform."

Electronic Arts has already confirmed on several occasions that it has nearly a dozen PSP titles currently in the works. While companies like THQ, Vicarious Visions, and the internal teams at Sony are preparing their support for the system launch as well. Other companies rumored to be working on future PSP titles include KOEI, Vivendi Universal, and Square Enix but all of them have yet to come forth with any official word or announcement. Though there's no doubt that this new hardware delay will affect any such news from coming to light in the near future.

Does this new development mean that Nintendo's recently announced dual screen portable will run unopposed when it's released this coming holiday season? Or will Nintendo announce a similar delay of its own? Stay tuned to IGN for the answers.
