I am looking for an academically challanging school for my daughter and was wondering if the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf was a good school academically and socially.

Note: The Pennsylvania School for the deaf located in Philadelphia not Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.

"academically challanging"?

I believe all deaf public schools are ranked the worst... always at the bottom 20%.

Source?

By stating that, u are saying the teachers who work there are doing a shitty job, right?

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

I don't think netrox mean to degrade the teachers of the state schools of the Deaf.

Yet he did hit a nail on the head--the funding for the state schools are horrendous as the public (hearing) schools usually get the bulk of the money.

And the Deaf schools usually get the short end of the stick.

I would hope he would come back and clarify....

I don't have direct sources (but the link is provided for PSD) but from what I remember in the past decade, all the scores I've looked that measure academic achievement in deaf schools have always been bad.

It's not because of bad teachers. Teachers are very social and that's why they teach. It's just that you WILL never have a deaf school that will perform so well simply because of linguistic differences and difficulties with translation to match the mainstream standards.

Do you notice that some deaf schools are better in ASL than other deaf schools? Which deaf school should serve as a "standard" for deaf schools? Forget the "mainstream" standards... just tell us WHICH deaf school should be considered the benchmark for deaf schools in terms of cultural and lingusitic performance?

(just noticed a thread on "best deaf school" - that's a good thread to debate on which school is considered the best for the deaf)

What about Indiana School for the Deaf? Wasn't that school ranked the best school for the deaf in the country?

I guess it would depend on the education system.

My high school had a shitty deaf education system.

A few of us were lucky to get through like every other hearing student. The rest of the deaf students were given a lot of flexibility with their schoolwork. They couldn't really "fail". They simply were given easier grading methods.

Result? They graduated with 3rd grade reading/writing along with 7th grade math.

I don't know how other deaf institutes function, but this is from a mainstreamed school with a deaf program.

I never cared for which school is the best deaf school or comparing deaf schools to public schools.

As long as each child's needs are being met, that's what counts.

Besides standardizing tests dont really reflect true learning anyway. That's the problem with NLCB.

myasma,
I would go and visit the school and check it out. One good thing about Deaf Schools is that most of them tend to have a significent number of kids who are academic. Also the early childhood programs (PK/preschool/ kindergarten and early elementary school) tend to be really good and much better then what you'd find at a mainstream school.
