Jeremy and I am still searching for a house.. we r thinking about buying or renting a house in the country in the small town of Indiana. We just want more privacy and peaceful. Although we are not too far from the big cities. We are in between of two big cities of Lafayette and Kokomo, Indiana.

Have you lived in the country before? Do you like it or not? What are the pros and cons of it? I have stayed over frequently at my grandparents' house in the country when I was a little girl. I have always loved to get up in the morning with them and just have breakfast then out to the farm to work either in the garden or in the farm with my grandpa. :)

I've lived in small towns since 1974 - I love it because of peacefulness and privacy.

Pros of small town/country:
Peaceful
Quiet
Privacy on large lot/property
Respect from town folks
Much less stress
Cheaper Housing
Cheaper Property taxes
Less Traffic

Cons:
Shopping may be limited
May not see friends often
May do some driving to do some shopping
May drive long ways to your job
More expense on gas

<--Agree with Swede's statements as I live out in country and I want to move back in the city! (Moving soon in one month)

Add another con: Limited access for broadband interent and cable TV.

I kinda disagree about privacy. I have experience in living in small town. If anything goes wrong with you, the WHOLE town knows! Where there is privacy? In city, its way too many people around to find out nor care about shits. What I mean is suppose you had teenager daughter that got preggy in small town, image what the impact it is? Golly!

On other hand, I do like town/country, they are peaceful.

yeah diehardbiker. Gossip spread easy in small town than say NYC! Smaller the population is, the quicker gossip spread like wildfire.

I prefer country home...

Pro:
Quiet and peaceful hell lot..
Kept busy everyday errands things do around country home as such gardening, much more...
Cheaper property taxes
Cheaper Living
Whatever you like bring lot of animals or Pets more..
Less traffic
Nice Community

Cons:
Expesne lot of gas Yes.. BUT.. PREFER FILL UP GAS TANK depend where location likely 20 minutes away from city or town.. will be no problem.. not expense expense gas lot.
Only expense 2 times 1 week and 2 days.... not that bad!
Not much around w/your friends.. Least still you have kept contact via MSN/AIM/YAHOO what else?? No worries..
Diffculites to get high speed internet.. depend on the area available... Contact your provider server where available range can provide you high speed internet area then you can pick that place area at....

City and Town..
Pro:
Awesome social events but..CON...teenagers hang'n around wrong crowd.. (grrrrrr)If you have kids... Just be caution!
Too tempation what you want to go out shopping... flies your pocket!
Access anything what you want to go... ENJOY enteriment expense your pocket too.
blah blah blah.. anything name it...

CONS: criminal living in city or town! *ugh* (shivers)

Yeah - after living in small town for 31+ years, I've forgotten how it can be in big cities! It's true about small town knowing anything going wrong....

One of other pros I forgot to mention... low crime in small town.

I just moved out to the country from city last summer. I love it. More privacy...less stressful environment compared to city

Since I am still struggling to get into city because population have grown larger, more people, more cars, the more traffic and longer it gets. It takes me one hour to commute one way to work just because of all those traffic.

once you are in country, driving is like a breeze, 5 mins to grocery store than being stuck for 15 to 30 minutes for only 5 miles to the grocery store.

People are more friendlier in country and more laid back than in cities. too many snobs and cuts you off from first few seconds when they approach you or meet you under circumstances like fast food etc....(no offense).

Too many to list pro and cons here.

There are many advantages for living out in the countryside/rural areas--

To name a few:

  • peacefulness--seeing the beauty of nature
  • space--room to roam about
  • less traffic to deal with

Just a few that I can think of for the moment, I had lived in a small town and stepping out into the countryside was always something I enjoyed doing each time--

Country and town

Pro-

=Peaceful
=beautifully view and sights

Cons-
=If in case of emergency, It's hard to get help from neighbors.
=May be a higher speed limit on roads which not safe for children who are playing on the yard accidentally walking up toward the roads.
=Shopping stores might be miles away not closer to home.

Cheri,

Road: Unless you or other people must trainned your child and make sure understand country road which isn't safe.. as long you have to walk another side direction where you want visit friend's place. I did trainned them and make sure 100% understand as long they use gravel road shoulder which it's the best safe, because driver can see spotted clothes are bright enough instead dark clothes "Never wear normal yellow or green" hard to see distance which it's weeds/grain color matches. That what I learned it lot from farmers who advise me. "Play: Use common sense their property home backyard really HUGE" If you have huge land backyard then No worries."

Emergency: Always ask neighbour's phone number where necessary seriouis emergency. Or nearest town have emergency which have firetruck /alaumance and police stn alikely 10 mins away from rural area.

Shopping: Nearest small town away from rural area. (Food store/post office/stores/vet/Gas stn and schools...much more) If you wanna go BIG MALL... go drive to city away from 20-30 minutes as for your enjoyment once in 2 wks.

Honestly, I did doing that for 1 in 2 wks and to go the mall at city. Expense not that bad..

Currency we are living in town and unhappy living here... really want move back country where we were fall in love living country rural area and will planning buy a country house.

I was born and raised in the countryside. And I HATED it. I'm a city boy!!! I don't like to stay home and be isolated at home. I love to go out and do stuff, go to museum, go to shops, go eat out, go see friends, and go out to the mountains on the edge of the Salt Lake Valley for hiking. I really like the city of Salt Lake City, it's perfect for me.

It's not true about crime in the countryside. Crime can be as bad in the countryside as in the city! You have domestic violences in households where couples can't put up with each other, and a lot of kids are too bored to do anything so they vandalise a lot of properties.

I grew up in country and loved it while I was a little girl. It was awesome to be able to roam the fields and play games, etc. I had a 250 lb. pig named J. Edgar Hoover as a pet. We frolicked days and nights.

But as an adult, I wouldnt live in country because there are limited job opportunities there for deaf people. I wouldnt want to deal with rednecks and their ignorance of ADA laws. I would have to commute a long way to city to find a decent job, unless I do not mind working at a small mom and pop biz but I would be in isolation. My communication needs comes first.

Instead I escape out to country many times a year to get my nature-fix but that is about it.

Cant deny about crimes, that is why most criminals are so afraid touch these area... too many people around knew each other so well... Unlike in big city, criminal can barge in and robbed house, and waved to neighborhood and nobody even realized or noticed.

I second that...

It´s an exactly pros and cons.

I was city person all my life before married and move to live in small town where my hubby raised up. I prefer small town to city. We lived in small town for 3 years before build our dream house in countryside which it´s 4 km away from small town in 1988. I loovvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeee it every second. It´s less stress with children upbringing than live in big city.

Yeah, True..... Gossip spread out easily in small town or countryside (villiage) where I live...

If u want to resell the country house, it won't be that much profit as it does in city.

It really depends on where... Suppose you bought a house in small town north of Lake Tahoe, there is SUREFIRE return in profits when selling the house. It has nothing to do with City or Town or Village. Just basically has alot to do what the area have to offer. You could buy a house out in country in front of ocean, I can guarantee you will get HUGE profit in return when selling house, on other hand, that if you bought house in worst area in the city, you won't be able to gain a penny, or maybe losing money. Bottom line, any waterfront properties really is the BEST investment you could buy in real estate world... Trust me!

Like what diehardbiker65 say.

And it´s also important to have good bus connection or nearby highway (motorway).

I would like to tell you bit about my country house.

We bought land in 1988 cost was 45.00 DM (Germany Deutsche Mark) per square = $ 30.00. The Expert from house company estimated the value of our house and land in 1989 before we start to extend wintergarden and porch on our house. It written that my land is value 300.00 DM per square ($197.55) and my house is also over 2 double time value on 1989 than we built our house in 1988. My house extension was done in 2000 but I estimate it would value more than Expert´s confirmation in 1989. Expert told us that the land increase 5% every year and value than house. We will order Expert to estimate our house and land again before prepare the will for our children´s future safety.

It´s nothing do with villiage or countryside but land value and well care house and garden.

I used to live on 5 and half acres for years during marriage till my divorce ended its so sad and I sure missed that anyway.

Pros:
Privacy and more quiet
less traffic especially problems when it was bad weather such as snow/icy on roads

Cons:
crime
noisy
worst traffic
