Prominent San Francisco book store closing

oh nooooo!!!! I really hate it when a bookstore gets shut down. we lost 2 bookstores in local area :(

Years ago, we lost Border's bookstore locally... last year we lost Barnes and Noble Store. There isn't many bookstores out there unfortunately :(

I have mixed feelings about the situation behind the closing.

I love bookstores, especially independents.

We have a bookstore co-op in the region where I live but I don't get to go there much <travel logistics>

same here. those are two bookstores we lost... :(

now I gotta drive further for BN... :mad2:

All being lost to good old technology. Everyone is reading from their devices if they read at all. I love book stores and libraries. I'm hard pressed to find a book store in my area.
Also, people, if they do read are buying second hand books from all those available on the internet...Amazon, et al. I think we've pretty much seen the end of the brick and mortar book store, sad!

It doesn't suprise me when a bookstore closes. Theres a couple Barnes & Noble stores where I live. I just wished books weren't expensive lol.

the one in SF is also probably closing due to the exorbitant price of rent. San Francisco is getting so gentrified (all the tech companies are moving in) and forcing out smaller businesses and long time residents because they can't afford living there anymore.

When I graduated from college I did briefly consider moving to california until I saw the prices of housing and decided on atlanta instead and couldn't be happier. And you know what's interesting is that nowadays movie studios are filming in atlanta instead of california because it's cheaper and they get tax breaks. Who knows atlanta might become the next hollywood?

I agree and was going to say that too about technology hurting books stores and other businesses. We have two independent book stores in my city and the stores added a small coffee shop to their shops to try and bring more $$$ to stay open.

I too briefly considered moving to San Francisco many years ago right after I finished my business/tech school courses. I have a friend who worked in SF and lived just outside of the city; even back then (at least 20 years) the cost of living was AWFUL. She said she and her hubby were lucky enough that her rent never really went up- I don't know about now though. Instead I wound up in Colorado and the rest is history lol.

The bookstore in San Francisco is closing for one reason and that is the city increased the minimum wage to $15 hr and the owner wants to actually make a profit. Just with the cost of rent in SF that is a hard thing to do with a bookstore.
