Major power failure across Northeast

Thousands of New Yorkers flooded streets where traffic signals were not working.

Aug. 14 — NBC's Brian Williams reports on the blackout which cut power across the Northeast Thursday.

Aug. 14 — An enormous power blackout cascaded throughout the Northeast, the Midwest and eastern Canada late Thursday afternoon, knocking out electricity to millions of people in New York, Toronto, Montreal, Detroit, Cleveland and elsewhere.

‘It’s like 9/11 again. I hope this is nothing big.’
— JIM TSUMI
New York motorist OFFICIALS OF THE Homeland Security Department said there were no indications that terrorists were responsible for the blackout.
Mayor New York Michael Bloomberg said the blackout was related to a malfunction at Canada’s Niagara Mohawk power grid, which cascaded across the enormous interconnected power grid across eastern North America. He said that the cause of the malfunction was not yet known but that it was “probably a natural occurrence.”

The evening rush hour was just beginning in the East when the power went out at 4:14 p.m., and NBC correspondents described scenes of pandemonium as thousands of New Yorkers streamed into streets where traffic signals were not operating.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said it was crippled, and all three major New York area airports were closed. Buses, trains and subways were not running.
Jim Tsumi of Riverdale, N.Y., was sitting on the shoulder of Highway 495 leading to the Lincoln Tunnel.
“I got no hope getting home tonight,” he said, pointing across the river at Manhattan, where the West Side Highway and a two-mile traffic jam were clearly visible. “It’s like 9/11 again. I hope this is nothing big.”

The blackout stretched over huge areas of the Northeast, the Midwest and Canada.
Every prison in New York state reported a loss of power and was operating on backup generators, NBC affiliate WGRC-TV of Buffalo reported. WNBC-TV reported that fire crews were heading down into the subways to check on thousands of stranded passengers.
In Detroit and southeast Michigan, where about 2.1 million customers were without power, inoperative street lights snarled late-afternoon traffic, NBC affiliate WDIV-TV reported. Some areas also reported shortages of water.
Cleveland power officials said 700,000 customers were affected. NBC affiliate WKYC-TV reported that telephone systems were also out.
Industry, government and transportation ground to a complete halt in Toronto, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
Other affected cities included Buffalo, Albany and Syracuse, N.Y.; Hartford, Conn.; Lansing and many other smaller cities in Michigan; Akron and Toledo, Ohio; and Ottawa and Montreal in Ontario.
Washington and the federal government were not affected Neither were much of New England — including all of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire, southern Vermont and eastern Connecticut — and other areas of Canada, including Quebec City.
The Federal Aviation Administration shut down Newark, John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia in the New York area; Detroit Metropolitan Airport and Hopkins Airport in Cleveland. The FAA said that otherwise, however, most of its facilities were operating normally on backup power and that planes in the air were in no danger.
Canadian officials, meanwhile, closed Ottawa International Airport and Pearson International Airport in Toronto.

Massive Blackout Hits Northeastern States

NEW YORK - A huge power blackout hit U.S. cities spreading from New York to Cleveland and Detroit and north into Canada Thursday afternoon.

In New York City, the blackout affected subways, elevators and airports, including John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports.

Thousands of people streamed into the streets of lower Manhattan in 90-degree heat.

In Toronto, Ontario, too, workers left their offices after the blackout hit shortly after 4 p.m. EDT.

Traffic lights were out throughout downtown Cleveland, creating havoc at the beginning of rush hour.

There were reports of outages in New Jersey and Connecticut as well.

Every prison in New York state reported a loss of power and had switched to backup generators, said James Flateau, a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections.

White House officials were monitoring the blackout from Washington and from San Diego, where President Bush (news - web sites) addressed troops at midday.

Arrgggg, not good :madfawk:

Well, I understand your anger about the blackout -- I am sure there was a glitch in the power generators and electricity system...can't really blame anyone for the blackout unless it was tampered and done deliberately. There's no mention of anything suspicious activities that attributed to the blackout. It could've been the heat that triggered something. Who knows? Relax and wait and see what comes out of the investigation if one is being held for that.

MODS: can you please merge this to another thread that is related? Ta! http://www.alldeaf.com/showthread.php?t=4738[/B]

I was just watching the news with my mom and she said that the Nuclear Power Plant may have blew up that caused the power outrages and there's a possibility it may spread across US, not just NE area.
I'm suprised I still have the power since the next town already lost power and there's traffic everywhere in new jersey. oy.

Your mother just overreacted! There is no explosion yet. No, it can't spread across USA. because Not all states share same power grids as NE states are using. for example SW states are Az, NM, NV,CO West coasts are OR, WA, CA I can recall CA has frequent rolling blackouts that does not affects other states..

Power in Hoboken, NJ is just starting to come back. Powers in North and West NYC are returning, They all will be back on within 8 hours. Detroit area might get them back within 4 hours.

I Live in Arizona and I am not affected. We don't get power from Nigaria Mowhawk Power grids that is up in NE! You need to understand that not all states share same power grids and get electricity from same power sources. There are over thousands source of power to get from. Water, Wind, Coal, Nuclear, Sun are one of many sources.

If a Nuclear Power Plant blew up, we would have seen the mushroom clouds and a report of people vaporized from the blast! was there one? hahaha.. nope! and If it was true, we would be hearing news about radioactive fallout but there wasn't. There are reports that people in affected cities are behaving calmly and walking/driving home from work after the blackout struck. So no need to panic!

I apologize for the misinformation. I only watched the news for like five minutes so now I got all the info. I didn't really quite understand why it happened, I'm just not good with any of that science-related or technology stuff (if that is science-related, correct me if im wrong) :o

This was very weird for me!

Around 4 pm, I had just bought some food for the freezer then microwaved a few White Castles cheeseburgers. I ate then started playing my Harry Potter Gamecube game. Within a few minutes of the game, I came to a part where I, as Harry Potter, had to open a chest. I approached the chest and the television picture started getting distorted and shrunk into a weird circle that was half the size of the screen. I was puzzled so I backed up. When I backed up, the picture went back to normal. I approached the chest again and it happened again. I backed up and it cleared up again. The third time, I just went for it and approached all the way. That's when everything went blank. I was like, "WTF!?" That's when I realized that we lost our electricity.

It might be you that caused this rolling blackout by attempting to open that chest?
