A man killed his two children and their grandfather before being shot by police in Sydney's far north-west.
Police saw the 30-year-old man stabbing one child in the front driveway as they returned the mother of the children to a small farmhouse in Wilberforce early Monday.
Assistant Commissioner Bob Waites said police ordered the man to stop his frenzied attack and shot him twice in the arm when he didn't.
He said the father was taken to Hawkesbury Hospital where he died of self-inflicted knife wounds.
The dead children were aged 20 months and four years and their maternal grandfather was aged 72.
Police had gone to the house to return the children's mother who was allegedly sexually assaulted by her estranged husband on Sunday night.
"What's happened today has been an absolute tragedy ...," Mr Waites told reporters at the scene.
"Detectives were returning (the mother) back to the home (and) as they drove into the driveway they saw a 72-year-old man, who was the grandfather of the small children, lying on the roadway bleeding. They then saw the estranged father stabbing one of the small children in front of the house.
"Police jumped from the vehicle, called on him to stop and he didn't do so. They discharged two shots, he fell to the ground (and) they then found that both the children, a girl aged four and a boy aged 20 months, were dead.
Mr Waites said the man had self-inflicted stab wounds to his chest, which was the suspected cause of death.
