I heard about selling animals in pet stores and contributes to the problems. such as PetsMart and Petco. Isn't that where you got your sick cat at ^Angel^? If most pet stores don't have a clue as to where their animals come from, how are you to know? Oh sure, they may know the name of the distributor they buy from, but certainly Not where the distributor got the animal. Some pet stores will buy animals from 'local breeders.' Never listen to or believe Anything anyone tells you in a pet store. Always get confirmation of any advice before relying on any information from a pet store.Never believe the sex of an animal from a pet store without getting expert (vet) confirmation. I have brought two kittens for my nephew for Christmas years ago both of the kittens died due to some disease that one kitten had and passed it along to the other kitten.

Did that ever happen to you?

No, that hasn't happened to me because we never used a pet shop. We got our first dog (a Shih-tzu born in Taiwan) from a family that couldn't take care of her. We bought our first Labrador from a local family breeder. (We went to the home, in the country, and inspected the place, saw the "mommy" dog, checked their documents, etc.) Our second Lab was a puppy of our first Lab. Our first kitty was a stray that we adopted, one kitty from the animal shelter, one from a cat breeder who used to show our kitty until the kitty was too "old" (one year) for showing, and the last kitty from a family who was allergic to him. I never use pet shops because of the bad reputation of "puppy mills" that supply the shops. They often overcharge for "pure-breed" puppies that don't even meet the breed standards, or are much in-bred with hereditary problems. I prefer to adopt kitties that are from shelters, or from families that can't keep them. My favorites are Siamese and Orientals. I prefer dogs from families that I know and trust.

I agree; Sometimes it is so tough finding animals that comes from people we don't barley know and not sure what the health of the pet is, until you take your first trip to the vet. ;)

I usually prefer to get my pets from animal shelters.

Amen to that.

Most Humane Societies are really good about taking care of their pets. They are not out there to gain financially from selling the pets. Their goal is to place them in right homes so that the pets will be happy and live safely.

Ive bought fishes from both PetCo and PetSmart. Both died right away and my girls were devastated.

They're cheaper too. They're also required to have all of their shots as well. Most regular stores charge extra for the shots and it becomes a pain in the butt for that.

Amen to that Vampy, that's what I'm going to do for now on....

A couple of years ago, Cheri and I went to PetMart to buy 2 kittens for my boys for Christmas and we knew the grey kitten was sick since he sure looks really skinning, so we asked the sale lady there if the kitten had any health problems? since he didn't look quite well enough to be place in a home, but the sale lady at the PetMart said there was nothing wrong with the grey kitten and that he is only 6 weeks old, and haven't been eating very well, first my thought was if the kitten hasn't eaten quite well enough as he is suppose to that means something is wrong with the kitten so I said to her if I could speak to someone in charge so I know more about this kitten cause I dont want to buy a sick kitten if he not going to last long etc...so she did got the person who happen to be the owner, so I had a talk with him and he told me that most pets here comes from the owners that no longer want them and we place them in a home where people wants to buy a pet, we check each animal and make sure they're heathly enough , and we do give them the shots and etc...so I thought there was nothing wrong with that grey kitten , so we brought the orange one and the grey one, soon as we arrived home to surprise them with those cute kittens, later that evening the grey kitten refused to eat, keep going to the bathroom on the carpet, and was not playful etc...so the next day I called the vet and went in with that grey kitten the same day, and the vet told me this kitten had infection, and was really sick so they wanted to leave the kitten overnight , so the next day, I called the vet to find out if I can pick up the kitten and if everything was alright, the vet told me that they rather to leave the kitten one more day then I could pick it up...

So the next morning , I went to pick up the grey kitten, they had him on a feeding tube, and told me what to feed the kitten which it looks like gravy , and giving the kitten medicine to kill the infection, and also found out he had a rare disease ( I forgot the name of it ) and there was nothing more they could do for him, so after two weeks before Christmas, that morning I woke up seeing the grey kitten ( Smokey ) was laying there just trying to breathe, so I rushed him to the vet hospital , and the vet said it was too late, there was nothing more they could do for him and that there was no cure to killed that kind of disease and the infection spread too quickly etc....*sigh*....so we had to put him to sleep the day before Christmas eve....

On Christmas eve, our orange kitten died, we didn't know there was a problem with it until we took it to the vet and found out that the kitten had the same infection from the other grey kitten , which the vet believe it spread to this one....so both of my kittens had died the day before Christmas and it was a very sad day for us all :(

For now on, I 'll be more careful on buying a pet, to make sure they have prenty of information on that animal, otherwise I won't buy it....I won't go thru this again....:(

Normally, I wouldn't buy animals from pet stores due to the common knowledge that they are often neglected.

But I did buy a kitten from a pet store once, and I've had her for a couple years and still do. She is a very healthy cat, and smart too. :)

The day I got her from the pet store, she wouldn't let herself go from my chest the whole way home. She literally clawed her paws into my shirt to ensure that she won't be let go of. It was adorable.

One more thing I forgot to add, after the vet on Christmas eve, when the second kitten died, I went to PetMart and wanted to talk to the same man that I spoke to when I brought the kittens , but he wasn't in at that time, so I talked to the manager there and blew up at her by telling her that I was lied at about a kitten that I brought and showed her the vet papers etc...I was soo upset that day, and was crying at the same time....She even apologize to me and gave me my money back on both kittens....

A couple days after Christmas the owner left a message on my answering machine, wanted to talk to me so I came in a couple days after I got that message and he gave me a free gift cert, and even apologize a couple more times, he said there will be changing in this and it won't happen again, and he even said that if anyone buys a pet here, we will have some kind of warrenty to get them a free first vet visit and if theres a problem with the animal or the animal die, then they will replace for another pet with no charge...

I was happy to hear this and that would make things much easier next time so no one goes thru something like this.....

I got my 1st calico cat Pumpkin from a former owner who was giving her away for free, I saw her ad online in petfinder. She's fine and not sick at all today :) My 2nd, I got her from a shelter near my grandma's in VA, she had a sister and I would have taken her too but unfortunately she died so I have just Minette and she's a great cat.. pain in the butt sometimes because she's always asking to be petted all day lol Third cat--Tigger.. I got him from Petsmart, he's never been sick since I got him from there :dunno: I guess it depends on the petsmart stores in your area because the one nearby here takes excellent care of the animals and is healthy. Even though I got Tigger from there, I did make sure to take him to the vet to make sure he's fine.. the vet said he's in perfect health and very good shape. Last, Fluffy, well she was born here.. Tigger is her father and Minette's her mother ;)

Another good source for pets is animal rescue groups for specific breeds. My daughter found her Aussie thru an on-line Aussie group. Our neighbors rescue Greyhounds that were used for racing but are "retired". They have had several.

It is sad about Greyhounds. When they are no longer good for racing they are killed, even though they are healthy and young. That is why a group of rescuers organized to save them for pets.

That's what most animal shelters do. They already have their own special vets and usually have signs on all cages explaining the situations with their animals.

When animals have diseases, it's best to not get a new bet for a long time after the last one dies... so that the risk of the previous disease passing on is almost none.
