I recently began learning ASL and my friend who is Deaf and I have become much better friends because of it. We kinda clicked from when we first met. When talking online, which is pretty much daily, often we type the same thing at the same time. A few weeks ago he said he can’t wait for me to become better, (well he signed expert), with ASL because he wants me to be his personal interpreter. This surprised me because he has quite a lot of hearing friends that are far far better than I am, but I am starting school soon for ASL. I asked him why he would want me when I have met so many of his hearing friends that are much better. He said he feels more comfortable with me than them. That I understand him. Not in a language sort of way but as a person. I also understand him when he uses his voice and he said a lot of people can’t so plus with me in that. And we have some sort of connection where sometimes we know what the other is saying/thinking with out necessarily having to say a word. I was wondering if this is normal. Do Deaf always want a specific person to be their only voice with hearing? Do you have some one in your life who is that for you? If not do you wish you did? :ty:

I think it definitely makes things easier. I work with the same four people all the time, and I know what they are doing for work, I know about their current projects and all the special terms and acronyms. They never have to stop and spell something out for me - they know I know what they mean and how to voice it. Also, they know that I am familiar with their field (computers) so I am comfortable signing what the hearing people are saying and the deaf people can trust my interpretation because I know what's being talked about. So I think it can be beneficial - however we are NOT friends outside of work. We occasionally joke and chat but we are not social...I don't have lunch with my clients or anything like that.

I know Marlee Matlin has her personal interpreter, I believe he is also her publicity agent but I'm not sure about that.

He referenced her when discribing it to me and that it would be like that. Thanks for the post!!
