Parents of Hearing Children complaining about FM systems

I thought this was interesting. I wonder if my old FM system bothered my hearing peer's ability to understand the lectures.

What do u think of this? Also about the woman's comment about the parents of the oral deaf kids taking advantage of her taxpayer dollars, what do u think?

I used to carry it around when I was a kid. Really never did much for me.

Maybe it worked for some. In my experience, it was completely useless. Mind you, the one I carried around was top-of-the-line.

Same here...mine was worthless. My HAs worked better for me than the FM system.

Sorry to heard that. A properly setup FM system will out perform hearing aids in the simple reason that the micophone is must closer to the speaker voice than with a hearing aid wish in turn gives better signal to noside ratio. I do not know your situation that you face that prevented your FM system to work for you. Not all technical asssistive devices work for everyone. I had four FM sytems in my life and they were a big help in the classroom and at work.

FM systems do not work for all. I am glad that you found it a benefit. I currently have a student (post lingual, adult onset HOH of mild to moderate severity) that achieves good benefit from her use of an FM system in the classroom. However, my son (prelignually, congential onset, severe to profound in severity) was not able to get any benefit from the use of an FM system, just shel and Banjo have stated. In my experience, I have found fewer who get very limited to no benefit outnumber those that get some to good benefit, and that the indiviual circumstances such as those I listed are largely resposnible.

I did just fine with preferential seating and my aids. Haven't really worn one since 4th grade. (except in college when I had a VERY soft spoken professor) When I asked for use of a FM in college, disabilty services said that I was the first one in YEARS to ask for that accomondation.

Never thought of it too as well. I don't recall anybody complaining nor anyone staring at me.

Yep, I agree. I had worn it from toddler to 3rd grade then it was ditched. Good riddance!

I don't believe it did a thing for me and my classmates. Which might be why we were no longer ordered to wear it during third grade or afterward. We were overjoyed, I can tell you that.

Interesting. I had an FM system for many years and it saw me through university as well. I loved it as it made me feel I was in a small room with just me and the speaker. I never had anyone complain about it though. Mine was pretty old by todays standards.

I had more complaints about feedback from my hearing aids when I used to wear them.

i remember the large area FM system from my first grade class well. The whole class had to use them when I was in the oral program. We all hated it because the headphones hurt.

I started using the Phonic Ear in the 3rd grade and they did help me understand people better but I started hating them in 6th grade as they made me stand out.

Loop systems never did much for me on the other hand.

I am the same as u. My friend sent me this link and I watched the video so I posted it here for your opinions or experiences cuz I wonder if hearing children can be bothered by FM systems or not. If there is feedback or the system in the classroom echos??

I've never heard any feedback or echoes in the classroom.

And, no............nobody ever complained about the FM bothering them. I wore the sexy body worn one, with the harness.........LOL.

During my HS years, I've lost two detachable pins and I did poke a hole on the middle of screen hole on FM system. I supposed to shell over $600 to replace a slightly damaged FM system, but I was told that school paid for it.

Someone totally destroyed a FM system and other person lost a FM system and had to pay $600 to replace it. Speaking of destroying a FM system, we had no way to know who did it on the last day of school and got away with it (without paying for the damages).

When my son was mainstreamed in the first grade, they insisted he use an FM system, and he used to take the batteries out and hide them. If he could get to the mic that the teacher wore, he'd hide that, too. I guess those reactions tell us exactly how useful the deaf individual considers the FM system to be. However, the decisions to use one usually rests on some hearing persons idea of how much help the FM system is.

Guilty of doing the same to my old FM system. The school eventually gave up in forcing me to wear them.
