Some El Pasoans Upset Over Racy Magazine Covers At Local Grocery Stores
Some El Pasoans Upset Over Racy Magazine Covers At Local Grocery Stores - News Story - KVIA El Paso

EL PASO, Texas -- An ABC-7 received an email from a viewer who said they are concerned about what their kids are seeing while they are in line at the grocery store.

"I am tired of having to turn magazines around, especially in Wal-Mart where the wait time for checkout is ridiculously long, so that my four girls are not exposed to the smut on these magazine covers," said ABC-7 viewer George.

ABC-7's Jennifer Myers traveled to a local Wal-Mart store to see if there were any magazines with offensive or sensitive materials.

Cosmo's cover contained headlines, including "100 Best Sex Tips Of The Year" as well as "Sh*t My Guy Says."

Another cover of Glamour magazine had "Sex & Love: 'Tis the Season for Hookups, Proposals and... Skype Sex?!"

For a slideshow of the other questionable covers that were found in the checkout line, click here.

ABC-7 asked a few local parents and El Pasoans if they thought the cover was offensive.

"It's not offensive, but it's not nice to see those at the cashiers because the children can see and can read all that stuff. So that's what I don't like about that," said concerned parent Olga Torres.

Other El Pasoans said they didn't want the content to be removed, but that it shouldn't be kept where children can see.

"They are magazines made for older people and that's how it should be kept, not at eye level where little kids can see them at cashier lines," said Angie Alvarado.

I contacted Wal-Mart headquarters directly about the viewers concern about the content in their stores.

This is the statement they sent to our newsroom:
"In an effort to strike a balance for our customers who want to purchase this magazine and our customers who may be uncomfortable with this issue, we have asked our associates to monitor the placement of magazines at registers to ensure these types of magazines are covered behind the shields," said Walmart spokeswoman Kayla Whaling.Whaling also said the magazines we found were already supposed to be behind cover shields that are built into the magazine rack.None of the racks we saw contained these shields.

What do you think?

Parents,if you have children dont let read nude magazine for example playboy magazine or any types magazines that nude magazines if you wishes careful for buy magazines but no racy for example sex magazines on cover or articles you must kept eye or leave magazine.

I never go to the store because I am offended by the floors in there.

It's not like they are Playboy or Hustler magazines. Don't worry, the children's eyes won't catch on fire.

Kids get a hold of racy magazines and look at them. Kids are curious. It's a rite of passage. If parents have a problem with that, they need an attitude adjustment about sex.

With an internet loaded with porn, why worry about a silly magazine in the check out lane? That's crazy.

There comes a time when a mom finds her Victoria Secret catalog under her son's mattress. ;)

Yea, but I'm going to miss clearance items.

I had a friend who was upset because her hubby took her VS catalog out of the trash. Seriously, how can a person be jealous of some images on paper? :hmm:

I actually agree.

I think the lines between what's proper and what's not are getting more and more blurry, correction - got blurred long ago,

and children are being more and more exposed to what's inappropriate for them.

I am far from being a prude, but I believe there is a reason why parents nowadays have such a huge problems with raising calm, obedient children
and society in general is lacking respect left and right.

There are no clear, definite borders what's not convenient anymore but simply too much .

I've got a friend who raised 3 boys. She said when her first one hit that stage, she was shocked to find a Playboy under his bed. By the time the second boy reached that stage, she wasn't surprised at all. By the time the 3rd one reached that stage, she was checking to make sure he had a Playboy under the bed.

Seriously. If parents weren't trying so hard to be such prudes, the kids wouldn't have to sneak around. They could actually have open and honest discussions at home.

I got into my dad's pile of Playboy magazines and showed them to my 4 year old brother when I was 8. I thought it was funny at the time.

I dont worry about those magazines when in line. Never thought about it until now. lol

NO WAY! When i was teenager my brother had playboy magazine and my mom tores magazines its her rules! I think its my step-brother's or my step-dad's

i dont blame my own mom!

Teen aged boys need some privacy with their sexuality. I feel sorry for your brother. That must have been humiliating. I would never do that to my kid.

My parents never discussed this stuff with me though they did give me a couple of books called where did I come from and what's happening to me when I was little. Everything I learned was thru wide reading and from friends.

My brother is 11 years older than me so if he kept a playboy mag, I prolly was too young to remember if I found it. I'm sure that if he had it and my parents found it there would be a huge fight.

If he was a heterosexual adolescent boy, he had one. They just didn't find it.:giggle:

There are times I think the prudes would have everyone wear horse blinders. Just bloody silliness!

Boy, do I wish I could locate the article in my old college psychology class that stated that trying to filter out various things in the real world was a possible sign of certain mental illnesses.

Most children are already desynthesized. Cartoon movies, such as Shrek, has inappropriate adult humor in it. Don't get me started on video games...some of the violence allowed disturbs me. It's ironic how so many people in the US mocks the Muslim world on how they treat their women, when Americans treat women like objects and shit.

As a mother, it's more important for me to instill the morals and values to my daughters and make sure they understand that they are to be cherished, loved, and treated with respect, especially with their bodies.
