Awesome, wish youtube would put its logo somewhere else... as I'm still young at learning sign the logo ate some of the words. I think I got them. :D

Anyway, good story and I agree with it completely.
 
So true and that was what I learned when going through a cultural shock at Gallaudet and frustrations. After that, I learned to have more respect for all different cultures. Boy, I was so narrow-minded before. This is a good analogy.

Is there on youtube a set of PSE or ASL dialogs with pauses like the old movies w/o sound? that way us students could REALLY test ourselves... like each person would sign one or two sentences with the camera 'included' as part of the 'conversation' (clearly scripted) then a large card would show with what was actually said and the translation into English if necessary. Then back to the dialogue.

(good a Google, bad at youtube search terms, seems to be a completely different syntax)
 
That's fine but I find in certain circumstances people do go a bit overboard to the point of pure zealotry which gives Deaf culture a black eye.

There are always going to be people like that in ever culture. Why worry about them. We can't change them so let them go overboard. If it gives Deaf culture a black eye to some people, then those people have trouble separating a community from a few individuals. It is all about being open minded. I don't see all Mexicans as people who wait on the side of the road waiting for work. A lots of Mexicans complain about them making Mexican culture look bad. Every culture has their own issues.

That's fine. Every culture has its issues. The only ones I am worried about are the extreme minority that have violent tendencies. And those ones truly give EVERY culture a black eye. Yeah, we get a few extremists here that give First Nations, Albertans and Quebecois black eyes with their stupid terrorist acts.

So what? Deaf elitism happens. Elitism happens everywhere.
 
Well, zealotry and elitism are not exactly the one and the same. Elitism is more common than outright pure zealotry. The only commonality between the two is that some judgement gets clouded for the sake of maintaining a certain "purity."

Ooooh... that would be cool! Yes that would be a great help for those of us just learning. Kind of like... watch the video and then check our 'answers' to see if we were right. lol

You just seem to be extremely hypersensitive about this.

Isn't it humourous that you find it easy to do potshots at your current President yet you get so upset over Deaf Culture, Deaf Community and use words such as zealotry and elitism towards our culture and community?

This is why you find yourself ostracised.. you put up a huge effort to do this. Key words.. you and yourself.

I just read a joke today that made me laugh. I’ll tell it to you.

After the Indian tribe’s Chief died, his son became Chief.

The son never respected the old Indian traditions – he believed it was better to go with modern ways – to “look to the future in the name of progress”

So the son took over as Chief, and the tribe depended on the Chief – they looked up to him. They asked him “will it be cold this winter?”

The new Chief was stuck for an answer – there were ways to figure out what the weather would be like in the old traditions but he hadn’t learned those old methods.

To stall for time, he told the tribe to go collect firewood while he meditated on what his predictions would be for the winter.

After the tribe was gone collecting wood, he snuck off to call the National Weather Service and asked them what the winter’s weather would be like.

The Weather Service told him it would be cold, he thanked them and hung up, and when the tribe came back. He told them it would be cold.

Later, he wondered if they were right, so he thought he had better check again.

He told the tribe to get more wood and called again to ask if it would be more cold.

The Weather Service told him it would be very cold that winter.

He thanked them again and when the tribe came back, told them to get even more wood.

He then called back and asked “Are you sure?”

“Oh yes” they replied, “it will be the coldest winter ever in history! The Indians are gathering wood like crazy!”

A cute joke, but the joke is telling us that sometimes there is value in knowing the old traditions and knowledge of a culture.

All cultures have something to offer other groups, and cultures can learn from each other.

The same goes for the Deaf. We have something to offer the world –

Our culture, language, history, art, etc.

It’s like ecology – we’re cutting down trees and rain forests are disappearing – Many people don’t care if they’re cutting down trees, but later we find out there were new animals, medicines, information and ideas to be found in those forests.

But if they’re gone, we having to use. It’s the same with cultures, and they have value, too.

This is a great story and I completely agree that each culture has something to learn from every other culture, as well as something to teach other cultures. :)

Upset? Hardly. Hypersensitive? About what? If I'm thinking what you're thinking/saying, then the answer is no. There's a certain fascination about Deaf culture (both good and bad). So, how can I be upset about it? I'm thinking along the line that I am a part of and belong to to 33+ million people with hearing loss and I'll defend them on their need for proper communication access, whatever they may be. I don't limit myself to any just one thing. Ostracized? No. Only by those who think differently and do things differently may feel the need to ostracize me on a personal level but that's not my problem but those people. I just simply see things differently and have a different philosophy. Something that either people agree or not, and accept me for who I am or not. Interesting that you've taken the armchair approach in analyzing me in a very personal way.
