When I was in college, I did go out with few different women, but didn't have a real relationship.

My deaf roommate had different taste in women than I did so we didn't do many things together.

Anyway, when I went out with woman, I alway let them order for me in restaurant. I have enough confidence in myself to know that if I need to order myself, I would do that. I always do that when I go out on my own. It's just easier to let them interpret for me.

My roommate at the time was stubborn. He refused to let anyone order for him!!! He insists that he orders himself!! He doesn't want any help ordering for himself.

Different stroke for different people.

I write out the order if I know it before hand and hand over the paper. When out with family, I order for myself. When at Deaf Coffee, I let son do the ordering as I am already at a table. Most of the people in the Deaf Coffee Chat group will type out the order on their cell phones.

I always order for myself.

I voice for myself, however I also explain that I have trouble understanding people when they speak because I'm hoh, so have my cell (blackberry) open to a note-pad type app and ask them to type any questions they have.

It's just easier - and it proves that Hoh/d/Deaf people are totally independent.

I don't ever use minors (children) to interpret for me, as it's not their job to interpret (and my Hoh/Deaf community really frowns on adults using kids as interpreters, even for "little things" as it sends a bad message to the hearing world - ie that we "rely on our kids to interpret for us" ... not cool)

Always order for myself. Some Italian dinner dishes I cannot pronounce, so I just point to them. And I also learned that a BK Whopper is not pronounced A BK Whooooper.
