I was finally able to get Adam's school to realize that he needs to have signing incorporated into this routine... SO we're getting a signing teacher!! He'll be learning signs at home and w/some of his therapists, but he'll also still get Speech Therapy at school.... (since they're funded thru Oral only programs they can't teach it there-- but his Early Interventions Program can provide it)

Adam has many other neurological issues besides his hearing that may or may not become 'problems for him' in the future~~ so we finally came to an understanding to offer him BOTH that way he has means of communication no matter what happens!!! YAY!! I'm so excited!!!

I wouldn't know that this approach was even available or necessary if I hadn't found this group and been able to get feedback from people who are knowledgable about it!!

THANK YOU all!!!

Congratulation that you have found a school that offer sign language even in ASL. He need that. I wish that I was in a Deaf school or a mainstream school that offered sign language back a long time ago. My mainstream school is mostly oral method and not allowed us, Deaf students, to sign. We had missed a lot of communications in the hearing classrooms, both in elementary and high school. I don't know how I managed to make into graduation from elementary and high school. I really need sign language in my life. I don't mind learning to speak with the speech therapy, but speaking the words are not perfect and the sound from my voice is really funny. So I really rely on just using the sign language better. It is easier for us this way and less on the lipreading as it is a strain or put a stress on lipreading which is not accurate at all. Keep continuing to sign with your son. I am very happy for you to get him in the school that offer sign language. Yah! :thumb:

This is exactly why I wanted him to have both available!! His daycare/early preschool is oral only so the signing will be taught at home-which actually works great for me b/c then I can be there w/him and learn--

Wonderful news! I'm so glad for Adam!!! :D

Yeah I caught that post! He is starting to get the hint...maybe you should try some of those books I saw online somewhere and *read* them with him before going to bed, so it's more like a game for him too! It could be fun even for both of you!

Just a thought...

Yeah I'm trying to incorporate reading into his night time routine more-- I didn't make it to the book store this weekend to pick up some picture/sign books but hopefully this next week I can get him at least one or two and MAYBE just maybe he'll settle down enough at night time to 'read' a book w/momma! LOL

Are you watching "Signing Time"? They are a great simple way to learn some signs. You can see some on Youtube and you can get the videos from the library.

Excellent!!!! He's getting the benifit of good speech therapy. Although I do disagree with a lot of tenants of oralism, it's pretty much a fact that oral programs, especially private oral programs tend to have really good access to GOOD speech therapists.

Are there any Deaf ed options in the area for when he gets a wee bit older?
Does Kentucky do the "deaf regional school program thingy?" (bunch of dhh kids from the region attend a selected school which serves as the base for the dhh program)

What problems are those? I have a syndrome which can cause a lot of nereological issues. One thing to remember is that doctors really are loath to admit that they don't know everything about how the human body works. They are very conservative so that if something blips up in research, they tend to be all "oh no it couldn't possibily be that way! It's a mistake."

Due to complications w/his birth mother- he has some brain 'differences'~ his brain is 'smooth' rather than having the little dips and bumps that the brain typically has (I hate to say it's 'damaged' just different) that put him at high risk for seizure and learning disablilites, on top of his hearing and vision impairment... we're being evaluated for the seizures right now- the 'differences' have also caused him to have some muscle tone issues (which he seems to be doing much better with)

The thing is we have no way of knowing what the neurological damage may or may not do to him in the future... it's possilbe his hearing will decrease even more- along w/his vision-- plus the chance of LD's, etc...

He's not really interested in TV yet... he 'watches' the opening credits to NCIS and then goes back to playing before the theme song is even done LOL When he detects it's on he stops what ever he's doing... but doesn't always look at the TV... :giggle: it's funny... but so far that's the only thing that has really caught his attention-- but I have watched a few of the Signing Times on YouTube-- and do want to have it for when he's able to focus a little bit more...

Not for him, for you! I think it is an easy way for parents for pick up some basic signs in a short amount of time.

My little girl signs "cup" "napkin" and "spoon" in the "Eating Time" video. Check her out, she is in a pink sweater.

Is that lissencephaly or more like the brain damage seen in Fetal Alchohol Syndrome or Fetal Alchohol Effect?

Awesome that u got signing incorporated! Good job for getting your son's needs met!
