We got a great new TV, but the only audio out is optical digital audio which cannot talk to our field teleloop amplifier by PhonicEar which is analog. Most DACs (digital alaog converters), that is the cheaper ones, don't have what it takes to convert 5.1 dolby sound to analog. After failing with a DAC, I called up GefenTV because they make a lot of these things. The technician knew what a teleloop system is--wow!--and told me that I need DAD, Digital Audio Decoder to convert dolby digital down to 2 channel analog L/R. Their model GTV-DD-2-AA did the trick--delivering great amplified sound to the severely hard of hearing. It lists for $129, but available for considerably less at Newegg and Amazon
BTW, I really chewed out LG for not having an analog audio out for those who need amplication. As far as I can tell, all of the affordable loop systems are analog.
