If you think you're deaf, you probably are!:D

Yea, it is confusing to lots of people. There are degrees of deafness which basically mean you don't have normal hearing. Generally speaking, if you have 10% to 15% hearing loss or greater , you would be considered deaf in the category of hard of hearing (HOH). It ranges from mild, moderate, severe, and profoundly deaf. Obviously, true deafness is no hearing whatsoever.

HOH or deaf

Obviously, true deafness is no hearing whatsoever.I hear things Im just not sure what it is I'm hearing. Sometimes wonder would silence be golden? I've got a ton of noise going on in there,Just nothing useable:pissed:

I have the same problem sometimes when I put my hearing aids on. I can recognize mostly environmental sounds. I lived with complete silence for 5 years after both of my HAs broke...it was nice for a while but it made lipreading even harder for me. I have the option with my HAs if I want sounds or complete silence so that's nice to have. :)

Lipreading

Hi Shel you bring up lipreading, i've been wondering about that. How do you learn it?Yep I know what you meen about taking out HA.I sleep through everything,it's one advantage. You dont have tinnitus? Never silence for me!

I have NO idea how I learned it..my mom put me in an oral deaf school as soon as my deafness was discovered at 7 months. From then on, I did well with it enough to communicate with hearing people. However, I dont use lipreading much anymore cuz it is just too hard on me and I was always asking people to repeat themselves. Got burnt out from using it full time for 28 years...

as a lipreader.. who still lipreads.. working with speech pathologists is generally a good way to learn to lipread. that's how I learned to lipread.. but i was also taught cued speech at the same time. and it doesn't take a short amount of time to learn lipreading.. it takes literally years of working with speech pathologists and instructors.. and it's not a miracle cure for all that some people think it is. I can read about 60% of what's said. but as someone mentioned in another thread, the normal is less than that. So you can learn to lipread.. but don't expect to know how right away.. it's gonna take time and work.

Heh. I've had the same problem, but since I'm severely-profoundly Deaf, I'll put myself down as 'Deaf' even tho while I was growing up, Deaf & Hearing ppl have considered me Hard of Hearing cause I hear well with my hearing aids. I had a those dumb body worn kind as a young child then had the BTE's one for the rest of my life. When I have my hearing aids on, I hear all environmential sounds, speech, etc.. I even talk & used to use the phone [with a certain few family members & those at the time boyfriends who were patient enough to get me used to understanding them over the phone] since I no longer wear my right hearing aid, I no longer use the phone but I've been able to haer just fine with just my left hearing aid, until the Tinnitus got worse and wrose and would get to the point where it masks out speech when people are talking, making me not being able to understand them. I'll still hear people taling but wouldn't make out a damn word. Sometimes it gets so bad to whre I can barelye ven hear people talking!!! That freaks me out badly! But, once I take out my hearing aid, I am completely Deaf. As I cannot hear anything but loud ass noises if right near by me. So, yeah in a medical sense, I'm Deaf. But other than that I will sometimes say HOH when I meet hearing people because it makes them less confused when I respond "Oh I'm Deaf" then they'll go "but how do you hear & talk soooooo well, in fact are you REALLY deaf?!" @@.
Ugh! LOL.

What level of hearing loss do you have? Just go by that and you'll know. If you're at mild-moderate, you can put yourself as HOH if that makes you more comfortable, althought there are quite a few HOH people who just produly considers themself Deaf. :]

Sorry for all the typos. I am sick & am sitting uncomfortably in bed with my husband's laptop. :]

Tmr marks 5 more wks til my CI surgery! I dunno if I should say Woohoo or Ekkk! LOL!!

I have a mild case of tinnitus. Whenever I drink too much wine or when I am sick and taking cough meds, it gets worse. I hope it doesnt become a permanment all day thing as I get older.
