Does anyone have an opinon on taking the courses to become an interpreter though an online interpreting services program? The one I am looking at IS accredited, and I just wanted someones opinion on these. It involves watching videos, and using a webcam for the classroom. Thanks!

I'd want to know how comprehensive it is -- do you get to work with more than one signer, does it cover ethics and advanced ASL grammar, etc. You might want to contact a traditional ITP and get their syllabus, and then compare it to the online class.

Sounds like good preparation to do VRS work at least.

A friend of mine did a class or two through one of these. It's a good introduction, but I don't think it can replace in-person education simply because of the nature of interpreting. Though Interpretrator might be right, it could be good preparation for VRS.

I would question the lack of personal interaction. Interpreting is so much more than what can be learned without actual exposure to deaf individuals and various situations. On line allows for no spontaneous communication.

I did a large portion of my ITP thru the college's Distrance Learning Program.

It's not the optimum way to do it but if you are dedicated, and if you supplement it with face-to-face instruction, it can be done.

Even our distance learning classes were held live in student groups, on our respective campuses, so we interacted with and practiced with each other.

I don't have any personal experience with individual internet instruction so I can't speak to that.

Whatever method you use, you must get the real life Deaf community exposure.

Thank you all for your replies. The reason I would want to do this through an online program, is because after I finish with my bachelor's degree, I am going to gradute school to get my Master of Science in Rehabilitation Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders degree. Because I will be in school here, and I would also like to take Interpreting classes, I would like to do it all at the same time, and not have to drag it into 5 years. I'm not 100% sure that I will do it at all, but I am looking towards the future with different options.

What is your career goal? Interpreter, Deaf Ed teacher, therapist, or...?
