I dont know why.. but i always use the sign ILY all the times...

In regards of myself not being american. I might think it might just being random to hearing friends, maybe? I think, I am really unclear. Let the others give a better explainatation.

I find it wonderful when someone use ILY sign. It show that the person does love you or someone special and it does have a special meaning for that person.

I think I know why your deaf friends have dismayed expressions on their faces. I don't know where you got the book "For Hearing People Only". We, deafies, think the ILY sign is for hearing only, not for the deaf. Personally, I think that is great that both the hearing and the deaf can use the ILY sign to let them know we care. It look like ILY is mean for only hearing people, not deaf people. Get it. We don't want the book about hearing which will make us think we have to be like the hearing, not deaf. That is my opinion here. I am very happy that you are in the ASL 3 class and learn how to sign better and be able to be in the Deaf communities. So be proud of being Deaf. Welcome to our deaf world in AllDeaf forum.

I see a lot of people using the ILY :ily: sign when they mean to put up the rocker sign  They forget to pull in their thumb. I think it's funny because they are trying to be all hard core but they are really saying I love you in sign language but they just don't know it. :giggle:

Rockdrummer, you got a point there. Maybe they saw that in the book "For Hearing Only' thinking that the ILY is a rock on sign. Boy, do the hearing people misunderstand when they sign the wrong hand sign. This make me laugh something funny with hearing people trying to express that hand sign. :giggle:

Bebonang, The book "For hearing people ony" is about deaf culture. Go to the link below and it will explin more about the book. It's intended to teach hearing people about deaf culture. According to the site it can also benefit deaf people to read the book. By the way, I am a hearing father of a profoundly deaf son.

Personally... I use the ILY sign all the time... I guess it's just my way of saying I care or whatever... If I really don't like someone I'll "accidentally use the ILY sign instead of the rock on sign... just with middle finger only..." LOL...

Seriously that's just my personality... either i like you or hate you...

I don't like ILY sign from everyone, because when someone say ILY many times to you as friend, but one day that person really LOVE you, and you would probably never get impacted.
I would prefer someone to not say ILY to me unless they really MEAN IT.

Most Americans tend to say ILY at end, as in bye way, what the hell I don't want my 75 years old teacher says ILY to me. That is my real-life nightmare.

I do understand your feeling about not using the ILY sign from everyone. We have to be careful what we say in the sign ILY front of friends and strangers. Just only family members. Sometimes we get carry away with it because we care for our fellowship and peace in the world. Our world is all mix up with war, terrorism, and high cost of living (we just can not afford with our minimum wage). We want our world to be a better place to live without all the bad news from T.V. news station. Yeah, I see your point that if a 75 years old teacher say ILY to you. That really would be a nightmare thinking that the old teacher love you and you don't want to cram your lifestyle like that. We just have to be careful so thank you for straighten out for us, Deafies.

I guess that depends on ones definition of Love. Personally I think there are different levels of intensity with love. There is the love you feel for your pet. There is the love you feel for your children. There is the love that you feel for your friends and family and there is the love that you feel for your spouse or girl/boy firend. And there is the love that you feel for mankind. All of which are a bit different. I don't think it's ever wrong to say I love you in any situation. Don't ever be ashamed of saying I love you. I'ts not said enough and who knows, if people would understand what love means and say it more often, there may not be as much fighting and crime and wars. :dunno:
