I know..I felt like :barf: when I read that article. LOL!

Patronizing attitude towards the Deaf/deaf, too.

No kidding...I CANT stand people like that. My stomach turned when I read the article hence my feelings of barfing.

I do see something wrong about CI being forced on her. I also had a severe-profound hearing loss and I did with HAs almost as well as she did with CI. I also was raised orally but was never denied ASL, I simply made the choice to be oral. I also never considered my HAs a cure and have always considered myself hearing impaired.

I'm concerned about how the author views deafness. At some level, this must affect the child's identity. I'm glad that she's doing well, but she needs to have a healthy identity, too.

I have known 2 children for whom the CI did not bring access to spoken language. They are both in a bi-bi enviroment, and always have been. One is multiply handicapped, the other has a parent who doesn't do follow up, and the device is often unused and broken.

I know several more. But they got the implant long before 2003 when this article was written.

Although 2 out of how many you personally know, has to be a significant number.

I know, personally, about 30 kids with CI's. So, 2 is 7%. That would mean that, in my experience, CI's have provided spoken language access to 93% of child users. But, I would add that the 2 kids that don't have access are not full time users, and have not had follow up.
