`One-deaf-woman show' coming to North Regional: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Trix Bruce claims she can tell you the story of her life without saying a word.

A storyteller and poet, Bruce brings her "one-deaf-woman show" to the American Sign Language Literacy Festival on Saturday at the North Regional/BCC Library.

The event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is the first of its kind at the library. It begins with the presentation by Bruce, who played Helen Keller in her high school production.

Bruce will hold two workshops. The first, at 9:30 a.m., is for those who are old hands at the art of signing. It will not be voice interpreted. The second workshop at 2:30 p.m. is for the beginning-to-intermediate crowd and it will be voice interpreted.

Continuing Education Units are available for both workshops, and supervised children's activities will be held during both workshops.

At 1:30 p.m. is a Chorus of Hands performance.

Deaf resource exhibits, sign-language story times with voice interpretation and craft sessions and entertainment for children also are available.

The Broward Public Library Foundation and the Alliance for Families with Deaf Children are sponsors.

The North Regional/BCC Library is at 1100 Coconut Creek Blvd., Coconut Creek. Call 954-370-1145 or visit AFDC: Alliance for Families with Deaf Children.

The event is the kickoff for this school year's signing stories group, which begins Oct. 7 at the Southwest Regional Library in Pembroke Pines.
