I knew about Nebraska School for the Deaf closing down obviously. As well as Wyoming School. (thanks to our resident allum) However in my rambles around the web, I discovered a few Deaf Schools that closed, or I never even realized existed like Boston School for the Deaf (kind of recent since it closed in '94) and Mystic Oral School (closed in 1980) That's really kind of fascinating to me that as recently as 1980, there was a STATE supported Oral School. (Clarke is private) Then again in the 70's they were still transistoning from oral education to Sign based education. What are some other Deaf Schools that were around in the old days that aren't around any more? I am surprised that there isn't something like a memorial site for shuttered Deaf Schools. It would be neat to read about old deaf schools, and read student's memories of Deaf Schools. Are there any obscure Deaf Schools that used to be around, but are now closed? Also I found out that DePaul (an oral school in Pittsburgh) used to have dorms until 1971. Wow.....that does seem to be early to have shut the dorms. That is the year my parents graduated high school!!!! It seems like we treat dorm closings and deaf school/program closings as a new thing, when in actuality they have been around for a long time. I know that Beverly School for the Deaf (MA) used to have dorms, but shut them in the 90's.
It's kind of funny.......I remember a wave of Deaf School closings or proposals for closing them back in the 90's.....but I found a proposal to shut down the Minnasota School for the Deaf and the Minnasota Braille and Sight Saving School in 1985! It does seem like proposals for Deaf Schools shutting down are very popular in recessions/depressions.
