Hi all. I just have a question to throw out there to you. I know alot of sign, but have not had the good fortune of using it very much. I pretty much guess I use PSE more than anything, but seeing that PSE and SEE uses mostly ASL signs, would most deaf be able to understand me whichever I used? Just wondering in case I run into anyone and need to use it. That is my fear in using my signing, that they would think I was stupid or something.

:D

Whats PSE? Explain to me what it does means?

If you living in your area, where alot of deaf people use ASL then you have to follow them as where you stand their land. If different country you would use different language not ASL.

Dont worry deaf will be thrilled to see you as they always happy to see any signers out of millions of foreigners.

They will be more happy to be patient with you and want to learn who you re and ask u for your emails.......

I sign PSE myself. You use the same signs as ASL the grammatical structure is the main difference. When Deaf see me sign PSE they have all automatically changed to PSE rather than signing ASL. Especially if I am interpreting for them. Most Deaf are just happy you have taken the time to learn their language and the communication is much more free with sign rather than written.

Agreed. Most deaf are remarkably adept at code switching between PSE and ASL. Which just goes to show, even when we as hearing try to adapt for the deaf, they still have to make accommodations for us!

And foreigners are quite able to pick things up fast too.

I started with PSE, but when I moved more into the Deaf Community I had some people REALLY encourage me to use ASL and get rid of my PSE habits. I still go back to those habits when I am voicing and signing at the same time but slowly I am improving.

How do you sign ASL and speak English at the same time? I can only think in one language OR the other, so I tend to sign in full PSE when I'm speaking English at the same time.

But I do agree that ASL is better--it's much easier on the arms and much more efficient.

That's what I mean when I said I go back to those habits when I voice. :D
I do try to voice english when I sign ASL but I usually end up doing a spoken version of PSE :laugh2:

I like PSE better.

I do understand SEE and ASL, but I'm not very fluent in ASL like most people are.
