I'm wonder have you receive the Nucleus 5 brochure in mail from Cochlear company? I got it today. My husband love this new nucleus 5 with remote. That is cool!

I actually got to look at and examine the real thing earlier this week (long story).

A couple of observations for those who might be interested in upgrading to it.

The improvements:
1)Smaller size and it shape is more like a fatter but shorter Med-El.
2)Uses two 675 size batteries. These last even longer than the three battery gig for the Freedom – Four days instead of three. Obviously, uses less power. They are working on rechargeable batteries and trying to get approval from the FDA on those.
3)New type of coil and transmitter. They are now two pieces. This is terrific news as you all are aware that the coils just don't last that long (I get about 1 ½ years of life from them). The transmitter keeps on working. With this arraignment, one only has to replace the cable at $95 at pop. Much better than the $295 for the whole thing like us Freedom users. BTW – The new style C & T can't be used on the Freedom (that was the first question I asked). Obviously, Cochlear Inc. want you to upgrade to get this feature.
4)New remote control to control the processor. This allowed them to remove the “screen” on the controller/processor. As some of you well know, that screen wasn't always reliable. I think the remote is a great idea. Better control of the device and some can't operate the buttons very well.
5)They mentioned that one doesn't have to replace the microphone covers as often. Not sure the exact details on this.

While all the above features are nice and well worth considering an upgrade for, there will be no real difference in how the processors sound to the user. In other words, there will be no significant improvement in the quality of sound either in speech or environmentally. They will continue to make small incremental improvements of the processing software and one can get those with either processor during the annual visits. They indicated that it is really through the implanted electrode that the significant improvements will show up.

Bottomline – Think long and hard if the upgrade is really worth the price. An upgrade without a trade-in is ~ $8000 and with a trade-in is ~ $ 5400 (per device). I have no idea how insurance companies will handle these situations.

The micophones are a bit better sounding as I was told by poeple that have upgrade to the Nucleus 5 from the Freedom. The Nucleus 5 is a bit better in noise since the Nucleus has a zoom feature that the Freedom does not have. Thats what I have heard.

That is correct. I read the information papers. I would like replace the sound processor to Nucleus 5 from my freedom. The payment will be 36 months as 3 years. I have to wait until next year or so. In case if it's problem with sound processor and have to update a new Nucleus 5. I don't have job and not make enough money. My hospital bills is coming first because of pregnancy. My CI surgeon from other hospital bills paid it off as well. Thank god!

Nucleus 5 looks great and a lot smaller and lighter. Only has 2 disposable batteries :)

Oh yeah! It's look great! Lissa, I want to ask you the question. Is your country in UK's FDA approval for rechargeable battery? In American is still pending of FDA approval.

Not sure!! But we usually get disposables but we can ask for rechargeables but I don't know if they have rechargeables for Nucleus 5 here yet

I like the look of the Nucleus 5 and the fact that it seem to be made more rugged. No more cracked controllers, I hope. I ordered my upgrade kit , it is a very $$$$ Christmas gift to my self but I figured by the time I took out the extended warranty on my freedom and with the trade in it was worth it.

I'll be getting my N5 next Tuesday (Dec. 22). I'll let you all know about it and maybe post some pictures and videos. It's my first CI so I won't be able to compare it to anything, but I'll be able to share what I think about it.

I would love to see the video and pictures of your new n5. We are excited for you. Why not you make blog website of your CI journey??

Good luck on Activate Day!! :)

I have sent TWO requests to Cochlear.com to get the info packet, still haven't gotten it.

I got given the N5 brochure at a cochlear event back in October.

I ordered a packet 3 weeks ago

I've been considering a CI and have always favored Cochlear's products.
I requested a brochure the day I found out about the Nucleus 5. but I haven't gotten it yet.

That may be true but it would not be enough to justify the price tag even with a trade-in.

I would only do it (trade up) if there is a significant improvement not a slight improvement.
