hi everyone, im not deaf but getting there fast. The nerves in my ear are degenerating faster than they are supposed to. I have a 30% hearing loss and have about 3 years of hearing left. Its hard to deal with but im dealing with it day by day. I would just like to know what i need to do to prepare for this.

Hmm, I would take advantage of learning sign language, while you have hearing left.

Welcome to AD ^_^!!

Most of your preparation will need to take place within yourself. Learning ASL, researching Deaf culture, getting your family and friends up to speed with your impending deafness, that is a start. Finding out info on devices you will need, such as smoke detectors, alarm clocks, VP and TTY. Find some websites. Come here and share the journey you are taking with the great people on this board. Visit ALDA Inc. Home page - Information and support for those with hearing loss. for some help. Get your employer to help with your transition, if you work. You may need to look at a career change, so if that is the case (receptionist, etc) find what you like and begin to learn now. You have many things to do, so do not swell on the fears and depressions that are sure to happen. Stay busy, and be prepared. You are welcome here, so do drop in often and share. I am also in your situation, but unknown how long I will have hearing in my left ear, as the right side is 95% deaf. You are not alone!

:welcome: to Alldeaf! Have fun browsing and posting! :)

Hello and welcome to Alldeaf! Learning A.S.L. (american sign language) and lip-reading is a couple of things you can get started on. Also, losing one 'sense' isn't the end of everything, just keep your chin up and there are many things you will be able to do and accomplish! Just hang in there and also, hope you'll enjoy your stay here in AD as well! :)

Have a great day!

Hi moxi2001:

Late deafness is a tough journey. I once met a late-deafened person and it was really a good experience for both of us. A hearing person who finally understands what it is really like to be deaf would learn to join with the deaf people by attending Deaf socials, Deaf clubs, and Deaf events in your local town or city. By the way, I am deaf, raised by deaf parents and have a deaf husband. Welcome to our deaf world!!! I would recommend that you begin associating with deaf people and learn American Sign Language now.
