AFP - Norway, the first country in the world to declare a ban on smoking in public places, plans to halve tobacco use among young people within five years, the health ministry said.
"The cigarette is on its way out. In 50 years, we will look at tobacco use as a very unusual episode" in the history of mankind, Health Minister Dagfinn Hoeybraaten said.
He was speaking as he launched a new publicity campaign to fight tobacco use, targeting largely youngsters.
"It is as important to convince children and young people not to start smoking as convincing them to stop," he added.
At 7.56 euro ($A12.77) a packet, Norwegians, together with Britons, pay the highest price in Europe for their cigarettes.
Norway's national ban on smoking in public places, including bars and restaurants, takes effect on June 1, 2004 though similar measures in Ireland and the Netherlands will be introduced in January.
