AKRON, Ohio - Last week, a jury convicted a Northfield Center Township man of murder, and Wednesday he was sentenced to life in prison. Willard S. McCarley, 41, was convicted in the aggravated murder of Charlene Puffenbarger, of Twinsburg.
Prosecutors say McCarley beat, strangled and suffocated Puffenbarger, 26, in her home in 1992, in order to avoid paying child support. The crime went unsolved until new advances in DNA technology led to McCarley's arrest and conviction.
Before being sentenced, McCarley had to face the family of his victim in court.
"How could someone be so mean and vicious?" asked Phyllis Puffenbarger, Charlene Puffenbarger's mother. "You will never pay the way Charlene did, with her life. I wish as much pain and suffering would come to you as it did for Charlene."
Ken Puffenbarger, the victim's brother, said, "I hope that the time you spend in prison is as miserable as the last 13 years that we have suffered."
McCarley maintains his innocence, and plans to appeal.
"The family has my every sympathy, but I'm going to prison for something I didn't do," said McCarley.
McCarley will be eligible for parole in 20 years.
