No one is talking about reading to HOH or deaf kids

I brought a Reader digest for the hell f and thy have an article about the importance of reading to your child and there was not one about reading to a deaf or hoh child by using ASL . This RD October 2014 book.

I think that is important. It's like some people only associate reading to the hearing. At my public library they do have deaf reading I just found out a week ago.

Most articles are written for the general public. Deaf issues, or educational issues for special needs, can be found in educational magazines and journals. They very rarely would be featured in People magazine, women oriented magazines or Reader's Digest.

But deaf and hoh people are apart the general public at least we should be.

When I was growing up, even as a child, I was never been read to (telling a story at bedtime) or sign in ASL. My mother would tried to sing to me but I just look at her in puzzle. I never knew about someone should read a story to me. I learned how to read when I was in the mainstream elementary school but still never tell a story to us, ever.

Back in the old days, there were no storytelling in ASL in the libraries. But now they do. It is good idea for the Deaf children to be read by a ASL storyteller. I would go for that. :)

EDIT: I did read some children books to my son when he was little because he is hearing. I don't remember. This was so many years ago. He will be 38 years old soon.

I also think I signed to him when reading the story to him and showing him the pictures. :hmm:

I'm sorry that you were never read to Bebonang. Every child should be given the tools to fuel their imagination.

I don't remember my parents reading to me. They might have; I just don't remember. I do remember reading to myself.

Oh, I think it's a good idea to read to children.

I guess the story was emphasizing the income of the families, not the abilities of the children. That could be a topic for a future story but it's rather specific.

No it was not the income on the families , there is a program out to give books to low income families so theirs kids can get ahead in school. The families can't afford to buy any books , I thought it would had been nice to had included deaf and hoh kids from low income families in this program .
There was not one hoh kid in the report on TV, this really bothered me.

That sounds like it was about income then. I don't see why deaf and hoh kids in low income families wouldn't be eligible for books, too.

I did not say deaf kids were not eligible to get free books , the story made it looked like only hearing kids would benefits from the program.

What is wrong with low-income family going to the library to borrow children's books? They don't have to pay for the books. All they have to do is fill out the library cards and borrow some books to read to the children. But we need pictures and sign language books for children so that they can follow the storytelling, I think. And it is good idea if there is a Deaf storyteller with group of Deaf children and hearing children (CODA). That would help.

The low-income parent don't have to go to the store and force themselves to buy books.
Library is the way to go, eh? :cool2:

Yeah, when I was a kid I cleaned out the library.

Several of us, teachers, have bought books for our students who are from low income families.

Was a book-worm growing up....books were my escape from reality...and as I got older (in my 20's)...I had my OWN Library....Moving to a different State was really a hazzle tho' with all my books, which I would not part with.....No...I've given books to a lot of Nursing Homes and to a Rehab Hospital....

Sure, reading to kids is great!...But today's economy almost requires both parents to work...leaving little quality time for the kids. Encourage them to read on their own...getting them books on subjects that interest them.

Yeah, when I was a kid I cleaned out the library.

I was always going to the library too , but I would buy books that I really likes , I have a few of John Steinbeck books and I still have Of Mice and Men from when I was a teenager . The pages are very yellow now .
