GameSpot, a property of CNET Networks, Inc., has announced the winners in the first annual Game TV Commercial Awards and Sweepstakes. The awards, which promoted games available during the holiday season, recognize the best, most creative gaming commercials on television. More than 50,000 GameSpot users -- predominantly 18-34-year-old males -- participated in the contest, viewing and voting on the 121 nominated spots during the month-long December promotion.
Nintendo won first place for its commercial "School's Out," a high-concept campaign created by Leo Burnett, USA that focused on promoting the Nintendo brand. In the commercial, which is set in Japan, school kids await the final bell and then run out of the classroom, propelled by the ability to jump trains, avoid cars, and fly over buildings. In the end, they arrive at a Nintendo store in anticipation of a new game release, where they appear in front of the store manager as various Nintendo characters. "Who are you?" the commercial asks the viewer.
