Woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, Im going and notice out of the corner of my eye something moving in the shower at the drain, I look and dont see anything, look away and I see it again... so I look closer and find the water is trickling at a very alarming rate, so I try the handle ( single handle shower set up ) and nothing. So it hits me, the shower is leaking. So Im up all night trying to reason why its leaking all the sudden???
Well, I forced myself to get up as its money going down the drain. I take my dreaded ass to the basement to get tools and make the climb to the second level weighted down, Pull apart the handle...opps, quick run to the basement to shut the water off, then back up.
I pull the valve apart and all looks clean and new still, put back together and turn the water on, still dripping but not a stream like before, so waters off again and pulled the valve out to have a closer look, there is another seat behind the valve body inside the valve, I pull that out and its cracked, busted actually. Nothing that anyone could have done as its an internal part, so I take it and go to home depot. They dont carry that part. So I run to several other stores, NOPE. So, I go back to HD where I bought it and explain that I bought this unit new, built my house and recently had the water turned on and now its leaking, I am not tearing out an entire wall to replace a unit, I just want the part...
So after much debating, that this was a factory defect, they got a new unit and let me tear it apart for the part I needed... it is now fixed.
I am glad that the plumber that they have working there sided with me, that this isnt something I could have damaged as it is internal so it had to be a factory defect when being built, the only way I found out it was broke is because i pulled it apart for a simple maintenance repair, as it hasnt been used until after we got our occupancy and water turned on in April.
Another thing I found out is, this isnt a part they sell for replacement either since it is non-moving, but if installed wrong it can be crushed when the external parts are tightened down, thats when the factory didnt check for proper seating apparently, So, I sent a letter to Home Depot thanking them for their great customer service.

picture?? i want to learn more about leaking.. My hub is no constructor or anything but he does fix it in a very basic thingy. Thanks..

Sorry, didnt get any pictures, nor do I have the part that was broke to get a picture of, was early, i was tired and wasnt in a good mood to be fixing stuff either....lol

I guess the factory that made the part does not inspect each part before putting it in the unit.

I had something like this happen when I was having work done on my condo. My bathroom just had a new sink put in and I woke up at 6AM to get ready for work and there was a water all over my bathroom floor! I pissed off b/c I had to clean up the mess and turn off the water in my sink . I called the guy doing the work and left an angry voice message and his feeling where hurts OH boo boo hoo ! I was half asleep and could had slipped on the wet tile floor.

Im sure they do "Delta"
This part goes in first and has 2 seals that recess into 2 openings for hot/cold water, if they dont seat and the main valve is tightened onto it, then it will break the plastic housing the seals are in.
Apparently this is what happened. I can take pics of the replacement valve, but am missing the actual piece that broke.

Ok there are 4 parts, The main body of the valve, the retainer, the main valve and the valve seat, the valve seat is missing, but you can see where the main valve would seal to the valve seat and then 2 spring loaded valve seats would seat in the valve body recess.

Kinda as a side note.
The company I was bookkeeper for used Delta for many years. But . . . once I found that the Moen single handed faucets could be turned off and on without returning to center that is the brand that I went with for my own. It allows you to turn the water on and off without having to re-find the temp that you want every time you turn it off.

Yes, at the time I couldnt afford 250-300 dollars so I settle for Delta, it changes temp as you rotate, I like the ones you can set then just push/pull on and off, also regulate the water flow. This one is full on when you turn it and I hate that.

I hope I am not speaking too soon! I don't remember what I paid for these as they were installed back in 1989 or at the latest 1990. In my case, in a house with only one bathroom there are just 3 faucets involved. You pull out or lift up to turn on (how far controls how hard the water comes out) and then turn from side to side for how hot or cold. To turn off you push down without need to rotate to center. I do not have the pressure kind that keeps the temp from changing if one of the other faucets is turned on. Only one cartridge has needed to be changed and that was under a lifetime warranty and they sent two! When I inquired about something else several years later and the diverter for the kitchen faucet not completely turning the water flow out of the main spout off came up they sent a whole new faucet as the one I have installed has been discontinued long enough that the part is not available. I have not yet had that new one installed because that diverter is not used that much.
