Just terrific. I take Nexium daily. This I do NOT need. :(

WASHINGTON, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- The number of potential side effects from the use of proton-pump inhibiting drugs to control heartburn continues to grow, with new research in Germany linking them to the development of dementia.

A new study links the widely used PPIs -- which include Nexium, Prevacid and Prilosec -- to an increased risk for cognitive decline, though researchers caution the study has limitations, and does not show a definite cause.

PPIs have recently been linked to kidney disease, heart disease, and deficiencies of B12 and other vitamins. While patients have reported side effects of the drugs, not taking them often results in stomach pains and worse heartburn as the drug leaves their systems....

There is alternative - LINX for Life, fundo surgery or Stretta, but sometime, you may need take low dose of PPI medicine or replace with H2 blockers

If you don't control the acid without medicine so your esophagus can be high risk to develop the Barrett's - it means changing the cell to intestine cell (that's very bad).

If you want procedure to fix GERD so you may require to take nasty test - manometry, pH study and barium x-ray.

I take Dexilant daily and awaiting for Stretta after I finish with wireless pH study and barium x-ray.

I'm sure that PPI-induced dementia is rare but you could find evaluation to ensure that your memory in brain is functional.

Also, my GI specialist said anyone who have GERD when they were young so they are likely to see GERD subside or disappear when they are getting older.

My father had worst GERD in late 1960s but it is much better today.

I take one Nexium in the morning, and one H2 blocker in the evening. I would like to stop the Nexium but I have to check with my doctor because I read that it's not good to stop abruptly.

I sure don't want dementia!

I hope that will be true for you. :)

I didn't develop GERD until I was middle-aged, so I guess that won't help me.

I take 2-4 tablets of Gaviscon at bedtime since all of H2 blockers aren't working for me.

I understand, does PD affect memory? Just want to make sure if it isn't mixed up with PPI-induced dementia. You could discuss about options with procedure to fix if discontinue PPI don't improve your quality of life.

PPI drugs affect my balance very much and I fell down more often so I cannot jump in inflatable castle or bed without falling. I have bad balance since 1988 but PPI drugs make worse.

I hope that will be true for you. :)

That what I believe too and I hopefully Stretta will fix my problem without depending on medicine.

You are in same situation as my mother - she has GERD with hernia and Barrett's.

I can't really notice any difference, good or bad, with the H2 blockers, even when I skip it once in a while.

It can but I think I'm good so far.

I prefer to eliminate meds whenever possible, so I will be asking my doctor about that.

Sorry to know that. Falling is not a good thing to experience.

There are worse things to miss than jumping in inflatable castles or beds. Hopefully, at your age, that won't be a major deficit in your life.

According to my doctor, I have GERD with a beginning hernia but not Barrett's.

How does your mom treat her GERD? With medication?

I read about dementia could be associated with PD and I'm concerned about increasing of confusion when discuss between you and me so I have to clarify my statement to make clear, but it could be my fault for not making clear. I started feel bad when I had heavy debate with you, but overall, I know you are brave woman.

Sure, you can try with elimination of medicine and hopefully work for you. I went thorough the elimination but make my life miserable. :(

That's true about falling, it may be harmless for young people, but PPI drugs can weaken the bone to make easier to break the bone. I know some doctors refuse to prescribe PPI drugs for athletes, especially football players.

I have ADHD (mostly hyperactivity) so I enjoying to make wild activities like jumping on bed or inflatable castle, that's more common on college campuses. I went thorough the school with ADHD and got excellent grade, but it make my life more difficult. I rather to work or play over going to school.

My mother take Dexilant in the morning and Pepcid at bedtime. She is tough woman and work as nursing director at children hospital. She goes after nurses over misconduct and bad children. I see no weakness on her side.

My PD makes me restless at times. I have a non-powered treadmill that I use or a pedaling exerciser for that. Maybe you can find some other way to use your restless energy that doesn't require balance.

I get heartburn too and I found if my have dinner around 5 PM I don't get heartburns as much . I heard drinking water before bedtime is bad for heartburn too. I was having closer to bedtime and was getting heartburns more often. I don't take any meds at all.

Take antacid or H2 blockers of your choice.

PPI drugs are limited to moderate to severe GERD that lasted for long time.

In case, if antacid or H2 blockers don't work so doctor will put you on low dose of PPI drug, possibly Prilosec - up to 14 days.

Hmm interesting. I know one of my parents takes either Prilosec or Nexium (pretty sure Prilosec) and has for many years. So far no issues and I am fairly certain there won't be- I'm pretty sure both parents and aunt will live to be 100....
